This is his work at the pre-draft.

Landry tore his ACL (2/26/05) near the end of the 2004-05 season and then worked his butt off and attempted a comeback (too soon) during the 2005-06 season. He redshirted 2005-06 (after playing in 5 games) once it became apparent that he had not recovered sufficiently from his injury.

Before he was injured, he was 2nd team all Big Ten his junior (18.2ppg, 7.1rpg, 2004-05) season. He has a great work ethic and determination.

It usually takes 2+ years to recover sufficiently from an ACL injury, so he should be almost back to where he was physically a few seasons ago.

Give this guy a chance and you might just be pleasantly surprised.

Carl Landry is a strange guy as far as measurement goes.

    1. He measured 6'7.75'' in barefoot, 6'8.5'' in shoes.

    Shoe Thickiness= 0.75''
Carl seems to be wearing ballet dancing shoes to the Orlando camp?

Compare that with Spencer Hawes: 6'10.5'' barefoot, 7'0.75'' in shoes.

    Shoe Thickness = a whopping 2.25''
He's wearing platforms to play bball?

BTW, the usual shoe thickness is about 1.25 inch.

    2. His standing reach was strangely short at 8'6.5'', I believe Chuck Hayes has a couple inches in standing reach on him despite being 2.25'' shorter. Morever, Brad Newley is 2 inches shorter and has a wingspan 3 inches shorter, yet Newley had exactly the same standing reach? Carl Landry must have a gigantic Yao-sized head and broad chest.

Did you guys see they just talked about what Seattle did tonight and had Carl Landry up on the board as one of their picks? They didn't mention anything about him being traded. How could we know for this long and they have no idea?

You would think ESPN would've found out about landry being traded by now.
They just said that he's with the sonics...

    weird.

Interesting pick. The question I have is (maybe this should be a poll question)... in a year, will we look back and agree that he was a better pick that Big Baby, McRoberts, and Fazekas? He certainly had nowhere near the buzz, but late 1st round/early 2nd round surprises often don't.

You guys should know by now that the media hates the Rockets especially ESPN !!!!! They are not going to keep up with us. We could get Garnett in a trade and they probably wouldn't announce it !!

    I follow college basketball.

In addition, here is a nice look at the PF crop presented by Draftexpress.com

    http://www.draftexpress.com/viewarticle.php?a=2128

    Here's a sample.

"Player Efficiency Rating, also created by John Hollinger, was designed to measure the overall statistical effectiveness of each player. PER may not be the best stat to use to compare college players, however, as it does not distinguish between level of competition, as Noah Libby-Haines explains.

Nick Fazekas dominated this category by a huge margin thanks to his terrific all-around numbers and efficiency, and was followed by Carl Landry and Al Horford. The bottom of the list has many players who weren’t called upon or were unable to be main scoring options this season, including Josh McRoberts. "

Basically in the draft, Morey is stating that Landry is better than Splitter, McRoberts, Fazekas, & Big Baby.

You could basically just switch Brooks & Landry's position, but that Brooks wouldn't have been there at 31 cuz I'm hearing Phoenix would have picked him.

So the question is will he better than those guys?

One more note... what do the Landry and Brooks have in common?

    1. Atheleticism: as many of noted before, these two ranked 5th and 14th overall atheletically at the combine. Their vertical, lane agility, and sprint scores were all well above average for their position.

    2. College production: Both were highly efficient scorer in college: TS% of 59% for Brooks, 65% for Landry. Landry was a productive rebounder at 9.6 rebounds per 40 minutes. Brooks was a 40% 3 pt shooter.

    3. Undersized: Both players fell as low as they did probably due to large part because concerns about their size.

    4. Not a lot of publicity: Neither really were in big time glamor programs getting all the hype, though by no means were Oregon and Purdue crap schools.

So... my guess is somewhere in Daryl Morey's draft database, there is evidence showing that when you are picking in the latest 1st round or thereafter, when all your prospects are likely to be imperfect in one way or another, there is a higher percentage of success among those who slipped there because of size and lack of notoriety than those whose imperfecction consist of lack of atheleticism or lack of productivity in games.

Good find. Morey talks about using the stats but still scouting and applying common sense. It makes a whole lot of sense to me that he could look at a PER rating like that and then compare Landry and Fazekas and decide Landry is the better pro prospect.

I still want to know why ESPN doesn't know this has happened yet.

That's a good observation. Moneyball is about deciding what is over-valued in the NBA. It's strange to think that height might be over-valued, but who knows. It might just be.

Undersized PF's recently drafted that contributes for their teams: David West, Ryan Gomes, Paul Millsap. Maybe Landry can be like those 3.
