http://www.economist.com/blogs/gametheory/2015/12/statistical-analysis-basketball Guys, check this out. I thought it deserved its own thread because it talks about him being an overrated defender. Also about energy expended on the defensive end being less "glorified".
It should probably be said that Duncan's teammate Bruce Bowen got more votes than Duncan every single year. Bowen got 2nd like 3-4 times. fwiw.
Berri is one of the old-school analytics guys whose methods are outdated. He sucks now, but over his career Kobe has been an all-time great. His core strengths are athleticism and intensity, which allowed him to get an above-average shot off almost at will. He's never been a pure shooter but he was very difficult to shut down, and if he wanted he could also bottle up most 1v1 match ups. These are skills that lead to small, but dependable edges even in the playoffs when the refs let the game go physical. It's pretty much the opposite of today's NBA, which is more and more like a game of horse.
During his prime, there aren't many who could match his on the ball intensity in crunch time. He's an easy target now, but don't act like you forgot. And also, this is the GARM.
