from Olney's blog on espn insider: Alfonso Soriano hit the waiver wire Tuesday, and in talking with folks around baseball yesterday, many are guessing the team most likely to be awarded the waiver claim is Houston. Whether the Astros can work out a trade with the Nationals is another issue, but certainly, Houston does have enough pitching depth to make a decent offer to the Nationals. I know this, after my Livan Hernandez mistake: The Nationals have until midday Monday to work out a deal.
I believe that he is a free agent at the end of the year which is why a team like the Astros who seem to be falling out of contention might not offer as much as you would think. After the trade deadline, you have to run a player through wavers in order to trade them. If they clear wavers it doesn't mean that they have to be demoted or whatever. Many times teams will run very good high priced players through wavers. The worst that happens is you pull them back and they can't be traded. If a team selects them you can negotiate a trade for not pulling them back.
Yeah, but it's only for a little over a month. Giving up anything more than a fringe prospect or two would be too much IMO this late in the season.
NO NO NO!!!! This is the Randy Johnson trade Part 2. We can't give up "our future" for a guy thats going to play in houston for 40 something games
I give the Astros credit for trying to get something done and not giving up on this year. But can he play SS? If not, we don't need him. DD
He doesn't fit on this team...nowhere for him to play.....unless he can play SS. Who do you replace? Scott - No Taveras - No Berkman - No Ensberg/Huff/Lamb 3b - Can he even play 3b? Biggio/Burke 2b - No Lamb/Berkman 1B - no Everett - Can he play SS, if so, then HECK YES !! DD
Highly doubtful that anything happens, but unless the price has gone way down I don't think you can trade for Soriano at this stage. Didn't the Nationals want 2 or 3 top prospects for him before? You crack me up ... you've given up on the season because the offense is so pathetic, yet you can't find a spot in the lineup for Alfonso Soriano.
with his bat you find him a place... Taveras is not the player he is neither is scott... I like them both if he could man center tho I would replace willy.
If the Astros can get Soriano, they will find a place for him to play. I just dont know if scott can play centerfield.
