I'm not a programmer though I learned some going through college. But I know how important the C programming language was to everything back then and still now.
Two IT giants dying in a week.

C and Java are the most popular languages around today.

C is at the weird level between assembly language and high-order languages that no other programming language has been able to duplicate and be successful at. That being said; I hate programming in C. Give me some other language that completely abuses my infinite supply of memory.

I find it surprising C is still more popular than C++ or C#. Why use a lower-level language?

This isn't really true anymore except for certain cases like device drivers or games. JIT compilers can do certain optimization that you can't do with pointers. Even with C++ IF you don't use the polymorphism and exceptions and stuff like that you can make C and other languages pretty similar speed.

This guy deserves crazy amount of props as Java, c++, c#, javascript, perl etc. took their cues from C.

All I know is that I got a D in C++ back in high school.

    But I can type fast!

RIP Dennis. I learned early on that programming wasn't my thing, much respect to someone like Ritche for what he was capable of.

You can make C++ have nearly the same performance as C (trivially, by simply writing C code and using a C++ compiler, or by careful selection of the "C++" features).

Here's an interesting page comparing the performance of writing a selection of benchmarks using different languages.

RIP Dennis Ritchie, thanks for C and Unix! Too bad most people don't know how influential his work was.
