I really think he will be an "interim" coach until they find someone they are 100% happy with. Maybe Casey and Frank didnt please Morey and co much as everyone thinks.

Pls don't hire McHale....i think he sucks. When i see him coaching Minnesota, he looks so amateur...i want to see a mean looking coach....someone that preach toughness and someone that scream and fight w/ the refs for every call...someone like Jerry Sloan. McHale is just going to sit there and enjoy watching basketball...he's not going to do any coaching. Also he hasn't proven anything. If you want to hire someone that hasn't proven anything, you might as well hire Sam Cassell.

Yeah hiring McHale so that he can mentor a young D-league coach who may take over after two seasons ... that's pretty much the definition of thinking outside the box.

And I'm pretty sure the OP works for CBS Houston. She's just doing her job posting the links.

KM's record a a head coach is 38 wins, 105 losses, his best showing was 19-12 when taking over for fired coach Flip Saunders. It was all downhill from there. As GM his best decision was the drafting of Kevin Garnet. His worst was probably the illegal secret deal he got in trouble for with Joe Johnson that landed the Twolves in the dog house with the NBA - causing them to lose *3* of their next 5 first round picks. To say KM's reign as GM and head coach was a disaster for the Wolves would be a vast understatement.

KM's draft picks after KG were the following:
Ray Allen (traded immediately to Milwaukee)
    Paul Grant
    Gordon Malone
    Rasho Nesterovič
    Andrae Patterson
    Wally Szczerbiak
    William Avery
    Louis Bullock
    Igor Rakočević
    Loren Woods
    Marcus Taylor
    Ndudi Ebi
    Rick Rickert
    Blake Stepp
    Rashad McCants
    Bracey Wright
Brandon Roy (traded immediately to Portland)
    Craig Smith
    Bobby Jones (traded to Philadelphia)
    Loukas Mavrokefalidis (from Phoenix)

Not a good record there either. I'm not sure what we want out of this.

The circulating mythos here is that he is a placeholder for a young gun named Sparrow or Grosbeak or Warbler or something. Said bird looks like Morey but less chubby.

And Anna Megan, you are not helping your reputation around here by just posting a flyer in the coffee house, and leaving without even ordering a shot of espresso.

If you hung out and talked basketball, people would take your suggested links more seriously. More than anything, if you posted links to good articles, people would take your suggested links more seriously.

You do realize that he is not being hired as the GM right? He is potentially being hired to be the head coach of the team, but the assistant coaches will be doing the X's and O's coaching day to day.

They need McHale to be the leader that they will follow and a vocal spokesperson for the team. McHale has shown a desire to prove to everyone that he can coach in the NBA. Well here is his chance to do it without having to worry about running the show himself. As long as McHale buys into what the assistants like Chris Finch are selling him and can sell that to the team, they should be just fine.

As for the trade/free agent aspect of Kevin McHale being a Rocket, I believe this could actually be positive. McHale, although having a weak resume of deals in his pocket, could actually help bridge relationships with the Rockets front office and other teams GM's and owners.

You wont find too many other guys in the league with so many friendships and positive working relationships accross the NBA. As long as he buys into the front office's approach to acquiring players or trading them, they should have a very constructive relationship.

Oh so he has no impact on anything then, nothing to worry about! Thanks such a relief.

How about a mentor that has had some success at some point in the last 10 years or so? Just a thought.

Briajn Shaw option just opened up for Morey. You think we consider him our main guy now that he is opened up? At first thought we didnt even consider him because it was thought he was the sure Lakers coach.

Doubtful. He's a serious coaching option, unlike McHale. The Rockets aren't looking for a coach.

It's time to quit watching NBA if this happens.....

McHale is a loser, simple and clear to everyone in NBA. I do not know why Rockets want his name with Rocket in the same sentence.

McHale's won more titles than the entire Rockets organization and Rick Adelman combined. :).

I grew up as a message board guy, but this is the first time I've registered on clutchfans.

Couple of responses to the critiques above -

I've softened my stance a *tad* since hearing the news conference and having a chance to interview Daryl Morey after they introduced McHale a few weeks back. I still have questions about McHale and his chances to succeed here, but I have said on the air that if they felt he was the best guy, then by all means, hire him.

In terms of Spoelstra/Brooks/Thibodeau, no doubt they all had elite talent. My only take is that I don't think you *need* head coaching experience to succeed here. In this specific case, are 2 interim stints that big of a clinching point, as opposed to someone who's an assistant?

I was surprised the Budenholzer thing didn't go farther. As someone mentioned above, the rumor/reports were that he wanted to stay in San Antonio. From my perspective (and this is a credit to the Rockets), I don't know why he'd want to stay with the Spurs as an assistant, versus pursuing a job here. Even if he becomes the head coach there, the team could very well be on the downswing.
