Have fun down here in the RGV. http://www.nba.com/rockets/news/rockets-assign-montrezl-harrell-rio-grande-valley?ref=yfp
Sad thing is this news hit my phone yesterday morning and it took almost 24 hours for anybody to notice/care. What happened to you Monster Trez?
He looked pretty good for the Vipers in the 4th quarter yesterday. Harrell and McDaniels are a pretty big part of why they won.
He started out really bad, but he got better as the game went on. Those numbers don't really do it justice. Also, an intangible thing about Harrell on the court is the energy he brings, he certainly needs to develop his game, but if he can do that just a little bit, I think he'll be a keeper.
He and Mc Daniels should be focused on shooting. Neither will become more than an end of the bench player until they can shoot at least at the bottom 25% of NBA players for their positions. Both will need to be in something like the upper 75% of defensive players for their positions. Neither has the court awareness to be that at the moment but their athleticism gives hope that this might be possible. Being athletic with potential is not enough to help a top team in the league which we are despite all the drama.
Without adding skill, what Montrezl is "supposed" to be doing should have & should still be able to help the Rockets get what they need from him. The problems that Montrezl can work on down there probably have more to do with fundamentals and discipline of learning defensive rotations better, working on blocking out better, defending without fouling, being in the right place offensively, etc. Harrell developing a 3 point stroke, turnaround jumper, a dreamshake, etc. isn't something I'm really interested in him developing nor do I think the Rockets think that way as well. More than anything Harrell really just needs time to learn, and adjust himself to the NBA game. There is no reason why can't at least bring what a Taj Gibson or even a Tristan Thompson brings. JJ Hickson at the very least. He's got the same type of physical tools, and skill.
I think team is working on developing a three point stroke...though it is probably more a long term than short term goal. Though I do think the defensive fundamentals are more important short term.
He's been awful lately and really needs the time to develop properly. Kid has a bright future, he's just not ready for prime time.
