When discussing 'big man minutes' there was one noticeable ommission... http://probasketballtalk.nbcsports....season/?utm_source=dlvr.it&utm_medium=twitter No mention of T.Jones? Hmmmm.... In other news The Texans came back from 28-7 to snatch a 31-28 victory over the Chargers in the opening game of the season!!!
Mention of starting Asik or Smith is contrary to what Morey has said. It's possible, but it is likely that the writer of the blurb doesn't have particular insight into the Rockets. Nice quotes, though from the Feigan article he referenced.
Not sure if people here were actually expecting him to start at PF and play 35 minutes a night or something. That's not why he was brought in. He also most likely wasn't brought in to be Dwight's long term backup if Asik is traded. I am almost positive that the organization would want to either bring in even ANOTHER backup 5 in that case, or put trust into someone like Donatas or Greg Smith to handle those minutes long term at the backup 5 spot. If Camby somehow dips into the fountain of youth then it would be just a wonderful surprise, but I'm sure its not something they are banking on. What they need him for is to be healthy in the playoffs next year, mentor guys like Donatas & Greg Smith, & be an insurance policy if the injury bug comes down hard. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if McHale decided that Dwight is having "flu-like" symptoms some nights, and gives Camby heavy minutes every once in awhile in Dwight's place.... However those nights will be pretty rare.
IIRC Camby was great in his previous stretch with us. I am glad that we added a leader like him to the group.
Yeah, not surprising. In fact, the following is a conceptual drawing of Marcus Camby's locker in the remodeled Rockets locker room: Spoiler You just never know how long these older guys can last if you keep using them, especially given what happened with him last season.
They said the same about Deke, yet he only saw 5-10 minutes in games where Yao was in foul trouble and funny enough in the earlier years (2005-2008) he saw no court time unless Yao was injured.
Even though I'm not a Texans fan, props for mentioning them in your post. Great win last night for them.
Did anyone expect otherwise?? We have Dwight, Asik, and Smith on the roster and capable of playing center. This story seems kinda Captain Obvious.
Not really. Camby is unlikely to be near Asik's at his age and is unlikely to survive the NBA grind without getting significantly injured within 10-15 games of regular rotation duties. He is nice to have in a pinch but not someone who can be counted on to replace Asik. Trading Asik at this point will likely mean a lot of Greg Smith at C. That said, it may well benefit the Rockets to trade Asik but ONLY IF the right deal can be found.
Asik is a goner after next season(2014-2015) in free agency, value is low now but will peak in-season. I think Camby at the starting 4 for 20-25mpg isn't a horrible idea. He can stretch the floor a bit and is agile enough to be in that position. He isn't a great jump shooter but he can hit the shot, though not advised. He'd be excellent in regards to our starting 5 defensively, off the bench we have Asik & Beverely for sure at 6 & 7. Though 8 and perhaps 9 will be up in the air, it gives one hell of a defensive rotation and I don't think starting Camby over D-Mo or Jones worsens us any offensively.
