The Rockets have been in trade talks with several teams about moving veteran guard Brent Barry, according to several individuals with knowledge of the talks.

The most serious discussions have been with the Los Angeles Clippers, Memphis Grizzlies and Oklahoma City Thunder. A trade to the Clippers could extend Barry's career, with the Clippers potentially offering a chance to play near Barry's Los Angeles area home.

Though nothing appears imminent, there is “a good shot” that Barry could be traded to create roster space before the start of training camp Oct. 28.

Rockets general manager Daryl Morey declined to comment and Barry could not be reached for comment on Monday.

Barry has one more season, worth $2.062 million, left on the two-year contract he signed with the Rockets July 10, 2008.

The Rockets signed Barry, 37, to be a playoff-tested veteran for a contending team, but with the injury to Yao Ming and with Tracy McGrady still working his way back from microfracture surgery, they have signed rookies Jermaine Taylor and Chase Budinger at Barry's positions.

With forward/center Pops Mensah-Bonsu expected to sign this week, the Rockets would have 17 players under contract, though Mensah-Bonsu and James White would nave non-guaranteed contracts.

If the Rockets wish to go younger but cannot complete a trade, they could also seek a buyout agreement with Barry, making him a free agent. Barry, a 14-year NBA veteran, averaged 3.7 points in 56 games with the Rockets last season, making 40.7 percent of his shots.

Yoyo, isn't Novak a restricted free agent? You really want Steve back huh.

    Cool guy, wish him well.

Most likely nothing more than cash considerations or a 2nd round pick but it's certainly better than buying him out or keeping him. Good luck wherever you end up Brent!

I can't see why any team would take him for basketball reasons.

I can't see how he could be dumped as an expiring contract, either, since we don't want a player back in return.

The buyout seems the most plausible.

it's going to be a Francis type deal...

Yao has been a very nice cash cow for the Rockets. We are able to buy players' rights and trade away others along with money and picks thanks to Yao...

Two for one or something like that would work. Teams might want White for cap relief considering he can be cut and cost nothing, though that really doesn't benefit the Rockets unless they can get a SG they can use back and just dump Dorsey.

I see this ending in a buyout.

Yea, good point... didn't think about a 2-for-1 scenario.

I think the blazers probably want him if they have the cap space.

    The most likely trade scenario

Barry + $2.062 mil cash for protected 2nd round pick(aka nothing)

I wonder if this is the minor deal Morey was talking about last month.

Yea, I also forgot that we could pay another team to take him off our hands a la the last Francis deal.

I'd rank the possibilities this way:

    1. We basically pay another team to take him off our hands (similar to the Francis deal).
    2. 2-for-1 or 3-for-2 scenario where we take back a longer term contract(s).
    3. Buyout.

He hasn't done squat for us. Good luck to him and hopefully we get someone who can contribute in return.
