He is better PF than SS, SAR or AW and he can play as center too. He plays hard . and is cheaper . sign him.
I don't want the Rockets to get SARs at all. Word is it has gotten better in CHINA without that much SARs. OR If he plays hard, he would intimidate, unless he's not that BIG, then he would just make the other team laugh.
if he is actually any good he would have been here by now considering he's already 30. i'll pass. i'd varejao from cleveland before this bum.
hey they say the spurs are contacting him right? you know the spurs scouting team know what they are doing? Oberto was part of that Argentina team in Athens. Spurs drafted Scola(he was part of Argentina team that spanked U.S. in Athens) in 2002 when no one wanted him....now he is arguably the best forward playing in europe and he's coming over to san antonio. he's 6'8" with manu ginobili skills. god, the spurs know what they are doing. first they get tony parker and ginobili with late round picks when no one else wanted these two guards. they sure know how to develop players. maybe we should follow the spurs system of developing players. get players with potential no one wants and thinks about......then develop them, make them play in Europe or something to develop their skills, then bring their butts here. we should consider hiring those italian guards who were shooting the lights out in athens, some lithuanian centers power forwards, jackevius(something like that, the guard who scored like 30+ against our "Dream Team") who were on the olympic team, maybe even try to draft Yi Jianlian in the future, yao wouldn't mind having a chinese buddy on the team.
the spurs do have the best forgein scouting but still the guy is 30, how much longer can he play? plus, if he was any good he would be here by now.
Oberto has been a good player in Europe for years, but it's been his play for the Argentinian national team that made him a star. He was one of the best centers in World Championships in Indy in 2002, and he played a big part on Argentina's gold medal team in Athens last year. Oberto is a great low post player, has very good footwork and fundamentals, and can shoot the ball all the way to 20 feet. He is also a tough rebounder and plays big. However, he's on the down side of his career and is not paticularly athletic. He's had offers to play in the NBA years ago but turned them down. There are rumors that he's seriously considering coming over to the NBA next year. I don't think that Oberto can start in this league, but he may provide a good backup at center/power forward position for us.
I think that the Rockets can sign him for 2 years. maybe next year are better options for pf available, but this year the options are really poor. oberto is a winner.
Now, its too late. ESPN.com The San Antonio Spurs have made yet another international coup, it appears. The Spurs have come to an agreement in principle with Argentinean center Fabrico Oberto, according to his agent, Herb Rudoy. Oberto, who averaged 14.2 ppg and 7.3 rpg for Parmesa in Spain this season, is widely regarded as one of the top five players in Europe. He was the team captain of the Argentina team that defeated Team USA at the 2002 World Championships. He dropped 28 points on Yugoslavia's Vlade Divac in the finale of that tournament. Oberto is a warrior in the paint with polished moves around the post. He's a good scorer, rebounder and defender who has the toughness and aggressiveness to be an excellent role player in the league. He's also a great passer in the post and frequently draws comparisons to Divac on that skill. Don't be surprised if he is the Spurs starting center on opening night. Oberto has been hotly pursued by NBA teams for years but has never shown much interest in the past. He's one of the highest paid players in Europe and has been content to be a star over there. The fact that he turns thirty this year, is considered a little undersized to play center in the NBA (he's barely 6-10 in shoes) and has the free throw touch of Shaq (45 percent from the line) has hurt his free agent stock in the past two years. The move by the Spurs means that it's unlikely they will bring over their other Argentinean big man, Luis Scola, this season. The Spurs drafted Scola in the second round of the 2002 NBA Draft, but have been unable to bring him over because of an enormous buyout provision with his team Tau Ceramica.
