I think he's the closest thing cinema has to a hip hop artist. That is to say he samples a ton of sh-t gives it his own twist and viola. His entire career is basically Paul’s Boutique or 3 Feet High and Rising. <iframe width="560" height="315" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/XG9wGUvw0MQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
not a fan. thought inglorious bastards and django were dumb. That being said, some of those comparisons in the video are also dumb.
"Gus, nobody cares about Blackula except us and Quentin Tarantino." Nobody watches the stuff Tarantino co-opted, largely because the '70s was the last time major studios invested in good scripts and actors for the sake of long term gains via word-of-mouth rather than trying to make nine figures on an opening weekend with a global release, so the low budget stuff was actually pretty poorly made. It was probably also the last time you could watch good TV on Fridays and Saturdays because studios didn't inflate ad revenues on Thursdays with excessive movie trailers.
How can you say Paul’s Boutique is nothing but ripping off other artists? You are basically saying the Beastie Boys are thieves. Give me a break man. There are a lot of terrible rap artists out there: like 90% of rap is terrible copycatting, but you are going to pick the one original album to draw a comparison with tarantino is a thief. lol
Paul’s Boutique is a seminal album in music history, but that amount of samples used in that album were insane. In fact it was that album that precipitated the laws requiring clearance and if made today would require millions to clear. QT career is basically the same. He used bits and pieces from a sh-t ton of obscure movies and made them his own.
Thief? Yes. Everybody needs to draw inspiration from somewhere though. Is he still a good director? I think so. Some of those comparisons were pretty scary similar but some of them were some far reaches. If he's a thief, he's a thief, but I cant deny the fact that when I pop in one of his movies, I enjoy the hell out of them.
I think they're more of homages than they are complete rip offs of other movies but hey what do I know? He also samples other scores from other movies but puts it in a way that's kind of unique.
Most of them are spot on and QT has been up front about recreating scenes from his favorite movies. As he is a gigantic movie nerd. I especially like recreating that scene from Blade Runner in KB 2 both featuring Darryl Hannah.
If it wasn't for Tarantino I probably wouldn't be this big of a fanatic in movies. I started to watch Pulp Fiction in High School. Been geeked out ever since.
Anyone who loves cinema from trash to art, it's beginning to present, has watched what Tarantino has.
I've enjoyed some of his movies but I'm not a superman either. With that being said, I do remember him talking about old movies that he loved so it makes sense that there are some similarities and nuances he pulled from. Long story short. Who gives a crap ?
OP seems to think Tarantino is only a director. Tarantino freaking wrote Reservoir Dogs, and that was a debut directing job, too. That dialogue is pure genius. That movie was really like a play, with two stages, mainly just one. That opening scene is enough proof. Tarantino also co-wrote Pulp Fiction He is a master of dialogue up there with Spike Lee As for redoing b-movies Tarantino is pretty transparent in his like of re-using b-movies. Thief? Weird way of describing what he does with movies like Kill Bill, which he also wrote. How can you one call him a "Thief" in choosing scenes and shots, when many of Hitchock's movies were from books or short stories.
