Carson appears outside the American mainstream wrt to religious liberty.

At the next debate Carson should be required to pledge that he agrees that the Constitution of the United States is the supreme law of the United States and not the Bible or Seventh Day Adventists Doctrines and he rejects any parts of those two tenets that are inconsistent with the Constitution. These type of pledges are inconsistent with past American practices.

Carson has always been full of plenty of crazy ideas. This is continuing with that pattern.

I get his argument. But, there's some pretty important conflicts between the Constitution and Christian teachings too. By this logic, we really shouldn't trust Christians in office either -- but that's all we've voted for the last 200+ years.

Carson would have a point if he himself didn't advocate for Christian-based laws.

I guess he must not have learned anything in his government class.

Can you be a brain surgeon and still be relatively dumb in just about everything else?

    Some tenets of Sharia law…

    Government based on religious doctrine
Women have fewer rights than men
    Homosexuality is outlawed
Rejecting science in favor of religioous doctrine
No separation of church and state
    Religion taught in schools
    Abortion is illegal

Curiously these are all the same beliefs are the Republican Party.

Maybe Carson should be more worried about a republican president

^Right wing conservatives are basically the same thing and it's funny that people don't see it.

Here's an idea, maybe the elected official should be sworn in on the constitution, you know the document that governs this land.

The tenets and implementation of the Sharia is varied from Muslim to Muslim.

Most folks (in modern Western societies) go no further than using it as guidelines for inheritance, marriage and divorce proceedings.

Let's just be clear here that he didn't say a Muslim president is against the Constitution.

This thread title is false and many of the comments after it are equally useless.

He stated his own opinion, which he is free to have and which sounds very similar to many of the expressed opinions on this board and elsewhere about devout Christians being elected to public office.

I don't think what he said is all that bad.

Islam, like any religion, is a belief system. If religion is an important aspect of one's political values, and Sharia demands this is the case for observant Muslims, then his opinion is fair and not contrary to the Constitution. He's not saying a Muslim should be disqualified from running, only that he personally wouldn't support one as President unless they disavow certain things he considers in contradiction to the Constitution.

^ So basically, the President should abide by the Constitution?

    Nothing groundbreaking there.

And for the record, yes, what he said was bad. His answer clearly pandered to the idiots

I think he is quite correct, not that he will get my vote. You don't want the president of the US being from a religion which has a huge number of terrorists and radicals that go around shooting people in marathons etc.

LOL ... you could make that statement in just about ANY thread in the D&D! Truth is people in most case will try to ridicule anything that goes against their core beliefs! Democrats will quickly condemn his view point and Republicans will quickly come to his aid! Nothing changes under the Sun! FWIW he didn't say anything worse than what Trump has been saying during his whole campaign and he's still leading the pack!

Thread title isn't accurate, but didn't he say all the things he's quoted saying?

Some of the concerns he expressed are similar to concerns some have voiced about Christians in office, and about as objectionable. But, I don't recall anyone saying they might be okay with a Christian president if the president first publicly renounced parts of his religion. Basically, those hostile to Christianity might be okay with a candidate so long as they can convince themselves he's faking it for the yokels and doesn't really believe any of that stuff. But, for the Muslim, per Carson, they have to take it a step further and actively denounce their own religion. So, not really the same.

The idea of a Muslim president is a new "topic" in America because Islam itself is only recently "mainstream" in America as a topic. It used to be the exotic religion of the Middle East and select groups of radical fringes.

But make no mistake, these types of things were said about Christians, notably Catholics. People said a Catholic would need to renounce the Pope in order to be President.

That it may be objectionable is perfectly fine. I fine quite a bit of Carson's belief system to be objectionable, but that doesn't make the thread title or the posts saying he doesn't know the constitution any less wrong. He didn't say it was illegal/against the constitution, he was saying he wouldn't vote for one or think we should elect one because of their views.
