Work is just getting busier these days, and it'll only get busier.

Nowadays I find it so hard to find enough time to practice solo to be able to perform well when friends are over. I just keep making mistakes and forgetting the next phrase.

On the other hand, I've always liked singing but never learned it as I'm so focused on the guitar.

This is the moment I need your advice. In the end of the day, it is music I love.

Should I continue practicing guitar, or just practice singing and enough guitar to be able to play along?

I want to get better, but it's tough not being a full time musician.

Anyway, this is where I'm at with guitar and singing:

    1. Guitar (tornado of souls):

    2. Singing (tears of the dragon):

You should find some groupies that will support you so that you do not have to work and focus on your talents.

You should practice more cleverly disguising your "look at my YouTube channel" threads.

Not going to click on you singing, I have seen your shredding.

Take voice lessons if you're serious

    You should take voice lessons.

If I were you stick with shredding. You're way better at that.

Keep shredding, maybe some Rocksmith for fun or mess around on Bass (the steam version is great because there's unlimited songs to learn from that end-users have made, stuff you won't find from Dlc, and while it's not a perfect tutor it's definitely fun), if you have extra time singing/lessons (you're not bad or something just not as refined as your guitar playing). I think your guitar playing is going to be a lot easier to maintain since you're a more advanced player.

After all my time not playing an instrument (sax/bass etc, and I played sax for 10+ years) I can still pick one up and get back into it (might take weeks/months), but it's easier to me vs trying to sing.. I can't sing though :)

You need to hit 10,000 hours to achieve mastery of anything. Compute your total hours spent on Guitar so far and calculate when you will be able to hit 10,000 hours. Assess from there.

It's so fun to play music, I've always wanted to try a bass. I think most people recommend me playing guitar rather than singing as I'm not starting from scratch :) It is easy for me to maintain guitar skills to play random stuff, but if I want to 'perform' more advanced solos it still requires a lot of practice.

It's just work which is making it hard, but oh well. Guess just have to make time.

Singing is a talent. Guitar is a skill.

Guitar should be the obvious choice.

It should be but isn't. So it begs the question why isn't it obvious?

got to disagree with this. singing (well) requires skill and technique and playing guitar (well) requires talent. natural-born talent is a plus, but with practice anyone can develop skill.

to the op i would just say do what youre into. playing music is supposed to be a fun, creative outlet...do what you enjoy and enjoy what you do.

i sing and play guitar in one band and drum in another. ive taken piano lessons and vocal lessons...ive always been a "jack of all trades-master of none" type musician, which i enjoy. i know others who dedicate themselves to only one instrument and thats cool too, but there are so many instruments to play...i could never stick to just one!

I think you should take voice lessons. You can get more consistent and pick up some nuances and see some (relatively) quick improvement there with investment from what I heard.

If/when you decide you want to turn this into something more, you can spend more time on the guitar. But from a hobby perspective (you mentioned wanted to perform when friends are over, etc.), you already have a lot there. If you decide you're going to join a band, you can spend time on the guitar leading up to that and while you're in it.

You can practice singing too. Breathing techniques and such to make your voice sound fuller.

Yes it is a talent so you might just level up to a notch that is reasonable.
