I did see an old post but unable to pull it up (new to this forum). Had turned off A/C when it squealed – as per usual. Let it "cool down" for an hour and turn it back on---runs normal. BUT NOW. Left unit “cool down” for 2 hrs, turn it on and noticed the fan was not turning, but there was a hum coming from the unit. The Hum is from your compressor which is a good sign... Now the BAD... It can be one of 3 things or a combination of.. 1. Contact Switch $5-$10 2. Capacitor $15-$45 3. Fan Motor.. $75-$125 Now Labor wise is a whole different story... My husband got a screwdriver and put it through the top fins and try to help it turn with the unit kicks on... We heard the HUM and he pushed the Blades.. It did start to kick in (thought it was the capacitor that needed changing BUT THEN a spark and a puff of smoke. What did we short out? Could it be one of the following or a combination of the items below. 1. Contact Switch 2. Capacitor 3. Fan Motor FYI we replaced the motor 4 years ago. We used the service company that installed the unit before we moved into the house).
