He probably chose the lump sum payment that's why he only got 500k.

Oh is that how it works? Do you get the full amount if you go for installments?

Does the $ go to an heir now?

In addition to a potential relative, if it doesn't get paid out, could it be someone who would benefit from not having to pay it out?

And potentially jealous co-workers, though it is mentioned that he would invest into his business, so they would have benefited.

I thought the supposed lottery curse was a joke, but now I wonder...more than just a handful suffered death so close after winning to be only a coincidence.

Yes, but it'll be something like over 30 years or something like that.

A few days later, a family member approached the doctor who had examined the body "and said they felt uncomfortable that it was being ruled a natural and they suggested that we look into it further," the chief medical examiner said.

I suppose this family member knows who poisoned him and an arrest will happen soon.

Because you don't test for every chemical known to man unless there is a reason for it. I assume there's the usual battery of tests they do and when is the last time someone got killed by cyanide.

You still pay high taxes on it..but because the payments are over a longer period of time..you get less money at once and therefore the tax rate is lower. You'd get something like $650,000 of the 1 million - which is more than the $425,000 for sure..but you'd have less to invest now which would lead to more compound interest in the future.

Yeah, but an otherwise healthy 46 year old man who just won the lottery and suddenly, mysteriously drops dead? I'm sorry, but you run every tox screen you can on that guy. This is bordering on incompetence on the part of the Cook County M.E.

The County Cook Medical Examiner’s Office does not generally perform the full post-mortem on people over 45 unless the death was suspicious.

Cyanide usually leaves blue splotches on your skin and since there were no signs of trauma found on Mr Khan’s body and a basic toxicology screening came back negative, his death was ruled as the result of the narrowing and hardening of the arteries.

Taxes on prize money are always ridiculously high, more than income tax.

I'd just cash it out too if that's how little I'll get more.

I am pretty sure Lottery is taxed like normal income. It just happens to put you in a higher tax bracket.

Yup you pay the full 35% fed tax for something like mega millions. Plus any state tax. Lump sum takes a huge chunk out as well.

    Interesting read from Forbes
