Since the start of the year turkish products are being systemically boycotted by the governents of Egypt and Saudi Arabia especially the latter has started defamation campaigns against Turkey.

Because of the free fall of lira he is trying as distraction to start fights and wars with everyone lately. Syria, Libya , Armenia, Cyprus and Greece.
We have been in the brink of war for the last months because he is trying to claim our islands as their own.

And Macron was the only one to agree in the push for economical sanctions in the EU council and stand up to Germany their ally who sells them weapons, even before the Charlie Hebdo saga.
Now after all the gloves are off I want to see how long before the EU impose them.

I have met many people from all aspects of religion and 99% seem normal. There is the odd 1% who are really screwed up but that can be true of any non-religion people.

I think Erdogan went with the flow for survival. There were Islamic revolutions and revivals all around him. He saw the writing on the wall and became one rather than deal with a civil war in Turkey and now he is stuck with it. People willing to die, as prescribed by religion, are a tough foe. Especially as an internal population. We've seen, the more you imprison and kill the more widespread and virulent the popular uprising becomes.

It is somewhat the same in other cultures, but institutional martyrdom makes it especially intractable. And it's harder to organize secular opposition because there are fewer centralizing concepts, and none as strong as being sanctioned by the Supreme Being.
