Thanks. I think our kids are two of those "must have skipped a generation" things. We're definitely the generation that got skipped. It's kind of scary at times. Hey, I wish I knew a good broccoli casserole recipe!

Wow, the sociologist is a liberal and the one who went to tech school is a Trump fan. Who'd'a guessed?

I studied foreign languages and such, probably could have been an English major; my brother studied History. We're both moderate left (he used to be more Bernie-ish; the one socialist we can agree on is AOC, but not for her politics, if you get me).

And neither one of us can talk politics with our dad. Just cannot. I remember during the impeachment trial, on the phone with my dad, biting my tongue until he started in with, "And Trump and his family, they don't accept government salaries!"

Which was the last straw, beyond naive, beyond inane: "Well, they convinced the FOX News audience"--which includes my dad; 75, white, no college, racist---"but do you think they're noble? All their properties around the world. They doubled the membership on Mar-A-Lago the day after he won the election! It's all one big grift anyway."

He pretty much hung up on me. I called back to apologize for getting into politics with him ("I didn't know you were so liberal" nearly made me start in again). Last time we talked politics except very very very elliptically.

That's good. You (a) [presumably] kept your "baby off the pole; if your daughter's a stripper, you ****ed up" (Chris Rock) and (b) didn't let the kids become Republicans (although Never Trumpers do have some good qualities).

God bless and keep you and yours!

EDIT: Oh, no, I've become the liberal General Thade, post after post after post......

There's been a lot of good advice given but to say in general I find it very troubling how divided we are as a society. I had a Trump supporting friend say that he is estranged from his children because in his words they are "hateful liberals". I suspect there is much more to his estrangement and I don't know if he became estranged from his children first or became a Trump supporter / TEA Partier first but when he told me that I did feel bad for him. In my dealings with him (outside of politics) he's always been nice to me and I thought he treated others in Judo well.

I don't believe that just never talking about politics around family is the right thing. Politics are very important and just not discussing it with people who you are close to to not cause friction isn't good either. There are times and places though to discuss politics and we shouldn't be talking politics all the time. It might sound trite but we definitely need to tolerate each other No matter who wins the election there will be millions who voted for the other person and that will include people we work with and are our family. We also need to understand where people come from and why.

That doesn't mean we agree but maybe we don't think of each other as evil.

    Yeah, found the comments.

I think the excitement of the hypocrite scumbags electing a pro-life, galvanize-the-Evangelical-vote, kill-Obamacare (while the Republicans pretend to have a new healthcare plan) SCJ made him go full douchebag.

I just hate these gigantic differences of opinion. I do not understand Trump's appeal, at all. You and I would probably be joking around in line for BBQ somewhere but cross the line into politics and it'd be like, "Uh, yeah, anyway, the brisket here is awesome, and the jalapeno cheese sausage, have a good one."

Actually I lean left on healthcare but right on everything else but let’s leave that for D&D ...also I lean left on LBGT rights but I feel those rights are in keeping with what should be a bipartisan agreement

I have to think about that Drox, I think Universal Health care is a right, I think lowering taxes on his buddies is bankrupting this country, I think his favortism to autocrats has been disturbing, I think his Ukraine call was highly illegal, I don't believe in a wall as a means of controlling our borders, I don't like how he has alienated our allies.

I think he is a fake religious person, and a con man. His Tariffs has screwed over farmers - more bankruptcies than ever

I didn't like W either, but I thought he handled 9-11 like a President should....whearas Trump ignoring the virus has led to 200k+ dead when it could have easily been contained.....

I can't think of one thing he has done that has helped the USA....not one...

Very few people are completely left or right on everything

I think it would be interesting to see where your daughters have common ground
They both females . . .. I wonder which supreme court justice they favor
(No need to answer but just an example)

    honestly don't worry about it.
At 21 and 20 they are basically still teenagers in the brain, and having fights like this is totally normal.

They will get over it and make up.
No reason to worry that your family is breaking up.

Oh also about this advise that people gave you, even if you don't bring it up it will be brought up between them
It's an election year and university students are full of passion for politics and changing the world.

Even if you don't say anything yourself if they discuss between themselves they could fight again.

To circle back to the original topic... Do you listen to the opinions of those who disagree with you? Do you honestly try to understand their perspective? Do you find and learn the facts from both sides and come to your own conclusions?

Absolutely, I know the facts before making a call - the difference is that I know CNN is factual but left leaning whereas Fox is propaganda - at least everything outside of the news portion.

Here are some FACTS for you.

Trump has been sued for having sex with a 13 year old girl with Epstein - TWICE.

Trump has been found guilty of defrauding a children's charity and had to pay a fine and is banned from being on the board of another one in NY.

Trump has been found guilty of running a fake University and had to pay 25M in fines.

Trump was charged and fined for money laundering twice with his casinos and had to pay a massive fine.

Trump continues to lie to the American public about Covid, has even been caught lying on tape - but somehow his followers don't care.

I read the transcripts and Trump asked for help from the Ukraine - but we have a Senate that is clearly in his pocket and corrupt. Honestly, they should have impeached him and given the republicans a chance to reset under someone with integrity.

Trump lied about bonespurs and skipped Vietnam.

I mean, what is there to like about Donald Trump - folks say he speaks his mind but he is always lying when he talks......what is there to believe in?

I find it's best to turn contentious conversations like that towards common ground if you can find any. You can't really expect a 21 year old to be all that mature or have well thought out political views, so just try to be as understandable as possible. They might grow out of it eventually, they might not....and certainly they won't so long as they are living at home without having to face the realities of being an adult.
