A Long List of GOP Senators Who Promised Not to Confirm a Supreme Court Nominee During an Election Year

    https://www.motherjones.com/2020-el...upreme-court-nominee-during-an-election-year/

Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas): “It has been 80 years since a Supreme Court vacancy was nominated and confirmed in an election year. There is a long tradition that you don’t do this in an election year.”

Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.): “If an opening comes in the last year of President Trump’s term, and the primary process has started, we’ll wait to the next election”

Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.): “I don’t think we should be moving on a nominee in the last year of this president’s term — I would say that if it was a Republican president .” (source)

Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.): “It makes the current presidential election all that more important as not only are the next four years in play, but an entire generation of Americans will be impacted by the balance of the court and its rulings. Sens. Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Hillary Clinton, Chuck Schumer and Harry Reid have all made statements that the Senate does not have to confirm presidential nominations in an election year. I will oppose this nomination as I firmly believe we must let the people decide the Supreme Court’s future.” (source)

Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa): “A lifetime appointment that could dramatically impact individual freedoms and change the direction of the court for at least a generation is too important to get bogged down in politics. The American people shouldn’t be denied a voice.” (source)

Sen. Pat Toomey (R-Penn.): “The next Court appointment should be made by the newly-elected president.” (source)

Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.): “The Senate should not confirm a new Supreme Court justice until we have a new president.”

Sen. John Hoeven (R-N.D.): “There is 80 years of precedent for not nominating and confirming a new justice of the Supreme Court in the final year of a president’s term so that people can have a say in this very important decision.” (source)

A long list of lying liars.

Now this aint their first rodeo, so I fully expect a huge infrastructure bill targeting Red States that Moscow Mitch needs it's senators to break their "promise".

They had the power to block it and they did. You can't blame them for not trying to win.

As I said back in the other thread what those senators said then was worth a bucket of spit and I'm not surprised at all that they are saying to fill it. Most of the current GOP especially McConnell have shown they have no principle other than ideology.

The Dems falsely pursued "Russia". The Dems shamelessly smeared Brett Kavanaugh. The Dems falsely impeached the President.

Now the Dems want to claim the moral high ground and fall back on unwritten rules? Sorry Dems, you made your bed, now you get to lay in it.

There’s simply no justification for what the Senate did in 2016. None whatsoever. Potpourri of “lame duck term” and “GOP majority” arguments were a salad of utter nonsense. The president has the power to appoint a nominee and the senate must vote to confirm or deny them. It’s plain and simple. Had RBG died back in May this would be far less ironic if a situation.

it’s worth noting that no nominee has been confirmed with so little time remaining before the election. I think the Senate should respect norms that have existed throughout American history. They won’t, but they should. It’s just common sense at this point. RBG might’ve put the final nail in Trump’s re-election chances though. If he names someone now, that will motivate democrats to turnout more than ever

McConnell - "We listened to the Democratic party and realize we made an egregious mistake in 2016. I pledge to never make that mistake again."

All this gets down to is ... Naked Power.

Congress to Trump, "Respect our subpoena power." ... Trump to Congress, "Make me."

Democrats to Moscow Mitch, "Respect the 200+ years of Senate norms" ... Moscow Mitch to Democrats, "Go f*ck yourselves".

Nope. There was ample evidence to have an investigation of Trump's campaign and ties to Russian actors in influencing the election. No investigation would be dereliction of prosecutorial and law enforcement duties.

It's sad that such a great American's death does nothing but bring out the poo flinging monkeys immediately after her death. If any of these people had any semblance of morality, they'd at least mourn what she has done as a Justice for a week or so before they start the back and forth.

    Vote em all out.

Yes, that was how it went until Mitch changed it. Mitch runs the senate, so he should at least go by his own rules.

Right, so why didn’t the senate vote on garland? You would have to twist yourself into a pretzel to justify anything this senate has done lately. It’s beyond embarrassment
