Any fellow Houstonians who love music from Mali? The **** is lit as as hell. A combination of old fashioned american blues with an african desert touch!
i listen to a bunch of malian music and african music in general. i think mali is the best african country for music...also, every person ive ever met from mali is super-friendly too. not half-naked, but this chick is gorgeous and makes really cool music... oumou sangare is bad ass...love the woman in this video too - her modern dance stuff is cool. love all the desert blues stuff too... ali farka toures son vieux farka toure is a beast on guitar. etran finatawa
Yeah, for sure, I've been exploring music from the African continent and Mali definitely stands out, they have a very strong culture in music. Fatoumata Diawara is really talented and so cool that you gave Ali Farka Toure's son Vieux a mention, the apple didn't not fall far from the tree.
Damn, you just posted a song from the album that made me fall in love with Malian music. Toumani Diabate is a legend.
It's quite amazing how people can do so much with so little, meanwhile many people in the Western world take everything for granted. Ali Farka Toure, the guy in the first video who is considered to be one of the greatest guitarist of all-time came from extremely humble beginnings, the only one out 10 kids to survive childhood and completely self taught. At the top of his fame he decided to move back to his home town called Niafunke in the Saharan desert where he became the mayor and where he used his own money to fund the development of his town. Sometimes I really love mankind, people can be so inspiring.

Salif Keita is amazing, definitely worthy of a mention and I completely love the second song you posted! Thanks! My GOAT is Ali Farka Toure though, without him a lot of Malian musicians would not get the recognition they deserve.
Love that album by Fatoumata Diawara, so many good songs. Had never heard of Sorry Bamba though, thanks for posting!
Anyone in the thread with Malian origin, if not, how did you find out about Malian music and musicians? I am from Stockholm, Sweden and came in touch with Malian music after hearing Toumani Diabate on the radio more than a decade ago.
