Is it OK to shame people? Is it OK for specific things? (There are only 10 poll choices so feel free to add your own) Why or why not? Votes are anonymous.
seems its ok for some things.. speech impediments are still cool to rag on..hispanics and asians kinda fair game still. midgets are still openly ok to shame.
Shame is necessary but there is a time and place for it. For example I don't believe in fat shaming but if I'm the coach of a professional sports team I would call out a player that was out of shape. I also think you have to know what the goal is of shaming someone. If you're trying to change people for the better some people do react to shame. For example as a coach if I call out some players for slacking they might react better other players might resent being called out and play worst. I get the feeling though that a lot of shaming isn't so much to try to improve people but it is to make an example or even for the person doing the shaming to feel better about themselves. I think that's one thing we have to be very careful about it. That doesn't mean there isn't a place for that. I don't think anyone would be against publicly shaming Harvey Weinstein or the Westboro Baptist Church. In that sense it is seeking to punish through public approbation people and groups that we see as being harmful to society.
The Japanese make an art of it. Very subtle, yet somehow also overwhelming. Really keeps society moving along nicely. You cant even shame people in the US, they get butt hurt or mad and start a movement.
I think any type of fat shaming towards strangers you don't know is horrible. Telling a friend you care about that they are letting themselves go is fine though.
Someone actually responded that it is OK to shame someone for being homosexual? OK then, I am shaming that person.
Forgot to bring up how much shame is used in Asian cultures. In Singapore they used to publish the names and addresses of people who did things like were caught urinating in public in the newspaper. When the country had a campaign to fight obesity they used to publish the names and addresses along with pics of obese kids. There is also a lot of truth to the stereotype of the Asian family using shame to motivate kids to be better students. Also just to add the use of shame isn't that subtle in Japan. Because I do Judo and also because I get mistaken for being Japanese even to other Asians I've been publicly shamed in Japan. I've gotten publicly harangued for not pronouncing Japanese words correctly, I speak very little Japanese, and also for not dressing properly at things like shrines.
the best eg has been the overt shaming / marginalization of Japanese citizens w physical defects / scars caused by the Atomic bomb, as well as their children.
Why am I just realizing that guy is played by Vincent D'onofrio, he is even more frightening in retrospect. Law and Order Criminal Intent is the best L&O.
The two highest % options were the ones I voted for. Racism and smoking can have an especially viscerally negative effect on those around you in public. If someone is verbally attacking someone with racial slurs, or if someone is refusing to put out their cigarette in a children's play area at a park, shame is fair game. That being said, everything is entirely dependent on the situation. Talking and expressing concern or disagreement in a respectful manner is usually the best option, but when people aren't open to that option, and are flagrantly bothering others, shame is the natural next step, before you swing.
