Taubman was an idiot and the Astros responded poorly. But there’s a lot of disingenuous reporting happening here. The whole thing is ridiculously overblown.

Are we supposed to think that Taubman and to an extent the Astros are on the side of domestic violence? That’s idiotic. He didn’t weaponize the word Osuna to attack women. The “fight” between Footer and Taubman was over the acquisition of Osuna, not the merits of how bad domestic violence is.

He made a stupid decision and then an even dumber one to cover it up and that probably led to his firing. But the story is done.

    What IYO makes her great.

    She's easily replaceable.

If she wasn't so thin skinned this wouldn't even be a topic.

But she is and should be treated as such.

All these people here defending the front office and attacking reporters when you know you would also be the first to pile on if this happened to another team. The amount of mental gymnastics being exerted here is amazing.

Even if you dont care for the morality of the situation, at least be appalled at how out of touch the front office is. Imagine how any female Astros fan may feel hearing this, especially if they have been or know people who have been victims of domestic violence. This is worse than LeBron "Morey hurt me financially" level of out of touch.

Besides they could've turned this into an positive. Recant and speak remorse and donate some amount of money to charity and spin this positively. It's not even that hard.

Hmm, not sure if I agree. Wasn't the controversy around the acquisition of Osuna entirely based on a measure of how bad domestic violence is? Is it bad enough to acquire that player or stay away from them? Astros decided it wasn't bad enough. Which is fine if you go the "everyone deserves a second chance route," while acknowledging that some people may disagree and remain respectful of that.

Then, a high ranking official makes it sound like he wasn't actually all that respectful of the situation, and even mocks it. Sorry, does not look good and does the plant the seed that maybe the Astros organization as a whole didn't take this serious enough. If the assistant GM doesn't even understand that he shouldn't be a douchebag about deciding to sign a player who beats women, it's not all that much of a jump to wonder if maybe the Astros organization didn't take it serious enough. Seems like it should have been drilled into everyone's head not to throw any more gas on that fire.

Its been more than a year since they acquired him. There was very little ongoing fire regarding him pitching in the big leagues... to the point that Footer was no longer posting her DV hotline during these games.

Okay, so the idiom I chose to use wasn't exact. Re-igniting a fire that had already been put out. Even stupider.

Chapman named reliever of the year.... he’s moved on from his domestic abuse.

For all the talk about disingenuous reporting... no one has reporting anything like this. The title of the SI article is literally the title of this thread:

Astros Staffer's Outburst at Female Reporters Illustrates MLB's Forgive-and-Forget Attitude Towards Domestic Violence

No one says anyone supports it - just that they basically forgive and forget when it comes to good players. That's basically the message Taubman was relaying with his taunt - who cares about his DV accusation, I'm so glad we got a great player and screw you for talking about it so much. Nothing was wrong with the reporting.

Of course... but as has been well discussed, that wasn't his intention (promoting DV)... but he lied about his egregious mistake, so he was rightfully dismissed.

Not sure what else needs to be discussed... but continued escalation or claiming the Astros are some toxic front office that supports DV is definitely adding unnecessary fuel to a contained situation.

So looking through her article history, she's basically a NYYankees beat writer who happens to work for Sports Illustrated. She went to Columbia. I looked through her article history and most of it covers the Yankees. She has two pieces, both recent, on domestic violence in baseball. Taubman of course, and another on the Dodgers. Conveniently there isn't anything written on the Yankees or Chapman.

I wonder how much she's baited her beloved Yankees on this issue. Or maybe she just turns the other way because its convenient for her. Also find it fitting that the two times she's touched on this topic recently, it has to do with two teams that were vying for the title above her Yankees.

So it sounds like she's not on a quest to write about DV and likely didn't have any beef with Taubman. She wrote about it when she was yelled at. And in this very article, she talked about Chapman and the Yankees...

Houston is not the only team that used assault as a market inefficiency. In October 2015, Aroldis Chapman allegedly choked his girlfriend, Cristina Barnea, then fired a gun eight times into the wall of his garage. Police said there was not enough evidence to charge him with a crime, but the league suspended him 30 games. The Reds had agreed to trade him to the Dodgers, but L.A. pulled out in wake of the allegations. Instead Cincinnati flipped him to the Yankees for four unremarkable prospects. When New York fell out of contention, it shipped Chapman to the Cubs, with whom he won the World Series. The Yankees received Gleyber Torres, the breakout star of the postseason, in return; that offseason, New York signed Chapman for five years and $86 million. After Osuna blew Game 6 on Saturday, Chapman blew it right back in the bottom of the ninth.

A year after the assault, Yankees owner Hal Steinbrenner considered the fallout. “He admitted he messed up,” he told USA Today. “He paid the penalty. Sooner or later, we forget, right?” No. Sooner or later, they forget.

Given that she didn't bait anyone on the Astros, it seems like a weird thing to wonder about.

And nothing wrong with Taubman pointing this out in the middle of the clubhouse. She felt threatened, LMAO

Truth is she didn't like him jubilantly pointing out the truth. She got butthurt and in today's world he lost his job because he had the audacity to point out that your post is the truth in MLB today.
