ESPN be like Houston is stacked,..... They have a phenom, a one pick in Anthony Bennett. if they don't win this year....
This thread really reveals who studies basketball and basketball players and who doesn't. Anthony Bennett has turned it around. There's no maybe about it. He's ready. And he's good enough to be in the primary rotation of a contender. His size, once a problem, is all of a sudden a plus. Mobile 6'8" athlete with springs, strength, all sorts of interior skills, quick feet, and now the killer.......a hair trigger 3- ball that is deadly accurate and that will cause defenders to have to dive, which will result in his secondary drive and dish/ finish. We need to get this guy nailed for 3 years and get his birds rights. Because he's gonna make big money shortly if he stays healthy. Bennett is going to be one of the rarest of players. A star to a bust to a star. Unheard of. But any student of the game can see how he fits in today's league and how he can star in today's league. This is an incredible story unfolding right before our eyes. Need to get him signed for 3 years.
He's average at the 4. He's quick at the 5. Still needs improvement. But I'd say he's average with room to improve. He's coachable. His offense has burst off the charts with proper coaching and training. He has the potential to be a plus defender as well with proper coaching/ training. And I hesitate to say he's not one already in small ball. Average rebounder and i don't think that will change. He's really a finesse forward in a power big man's body. Doesn't carve out space or box out particularly well. I think that is just who he is. He wants to leak and run instead of bang.
I don't really study basketball players. Never claimed to. But his prior NBA stats https://www.basketball-reference.com/players/b/bennean01.html and his brief time with Fenerbahce: https://www.basketball-reference.com/international/players/anthony-bennett-1.html are awful. Amazingly awful. Then 2016-17 in the G League happens, and it's like he's doing kegstands with the Holy Grail. https://www.basketball-reference.com/gleague/players/b/bennean01d.html I mean, his 3 pt percentage is around 42-43) now. Over a few years there and over 330 attempts. 80 percent FT. Not quite a 21/8 guy per 36. Who knows? Maybe he gets it now?
He developed the 3. Was a midrange shooter coming in. Trying to throw 16 footers in over 7- footers. They knew he had no range and could just sit and wait for him to come in to them. On top of that he came in fat. He was AWFUL. He was a BUST. Very small incremental improvement in his game. And then somehow the light switch came on for him. He developed that 3 stroke. Got in as lot better shape. And all his game went through the roof when he was able to get the opponent's to have to guard him at the arc. This is a different player than the guy that came into the league #1. He can actually play now. Any basketball student can see it. This is why you've got to watch guys play. Not just look at old stat sheets and box scores.
