If we do a sign n trade with Capela I believe we hard cap ourselves for the 18'-19' season, which makes getting LeBron AND filling out the roster with competent players difficult.

I wonder if Anderson would be willing to take a pay cut? We could ask. Right? He must feel guilty making all that money.

Maybe Tilman could work out a deal where Anderson just retires, but then is given a restaurant chain. Maybe Joe's Crab Shack.

There must be a way around this problem.

That’s why lebron opts in and we trade before free agency like we did with cp3

    Have to be 3 way

Did you really just write an entire essay to say that we can't afford to lose EGo even if it means getting LeBron?

We basically have no other option cap-wise. I'll even pack his bags for him if it means LeBron is coming.

Bolded part doesn't make sense to me. Signing free agents isn't very likely considering all the other salary commitments. Best route imo is to trade him for smaller and shorter or expiring contracts. It would be a lot easier to do a S&T with 2 $10 million/1 year contracts than with one $20 million/2 year contract.

Could we get an injured player exemption if somebody Tonya Harding'ed Ryan Anderson's knee?

I might be mistaken but I think the way I read it was that the acquiring team of a S&T would be hard capped, not the sending team.

Even if we sought a 3 way trade with Phoenix and Cleveland (with LeBron opting in to be traded here) it wouldn't be able to happen BEFORE free agency begins as Capela can't be signed to his new contract until after July 1st I believe.

That actually makes more sense, however just now reading the sign and trade rules, if Clint signs an offer sheet anywhere we can't proceed with a sign and trade.

To qualify for a sign-and-trade, all of the following must be true:

    • The player must re-sign with his prior team -- a team cannot include another team's free agent in a sign-and-trade.
    • The player must finish the preceding season with that team (deals are no longer allowed that sign-and-trade players who are out of the league, such as the sign-and-trade that sent Keith Van Horn from Dallas to New Jersey as part of the Jason Kidd trade in 2008).
    • The player cannot be a restricted free agent who has signed an offer sheet with another team (see question number 42).
    • The team receiving the player cannot be above the "Apron" (see question number 20) at the conclusion of the trade1, 2. A team above the Apron can receive a player in a sign-and-trade if the trade reduces the team's payroll and the team finishes the trade below the Apron.
    • The team cannot receive a player in a sign-and-trade if they have used the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception (see question number 25) that season.1
    • The trade must be completed prior to the first game of the regular season (sign-and-trades are not allowed once the season begins).
    • The player cannot be signed using the Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, the Taxpayer Mid-Level exception, or any exception that cannot be used to offer a three-year contract (see question number 25).

Why wouldn't we want Thaddeus Young? He costs 7 million less and is definitely playable against Golden State.

Yeah I remember this was the issue with Parsons. If he had waited before signing the offer sheet we could have worked out a S&T (I think). At the very least if we knew we weren’t going to match we should have traded as soon as possible to a team that wanted him and would match him if he got offered a crazy amount.

Anyway for the purposes of this discussion I suppose you could trade Capela (before he gets maxed) with Ryno and take back chandler.

As big of a component to what we do that Gordon has been, he is ultimately expendable. He barely shot above 30% from three for the playoffs and is a poor rebounder and passer. He is a solid defender but undersized for a shooting guard. Not saying he can be easily replaced but you can definitely win a championship even without him.

While everyone covets the King as our number 1 free agent target, all the avenues to acquire him seem very difficult, almost impossible even. I believe a more realistic course of action is to pursue Paul George using the “opt-in and trade” method that landed us CP3 and that many people are hoping might land us LeBron.

The first step is to find a taker for Ryan Anderson, who at this point is a lost cause that we just want to rid ourselves of. This trade depends on LeBron leaving the Cavs (for somewhere OTHER than Houston):

CLE In: Anderson, HOU 2019 1st
CLE Out: Clarkson OR Smith, Korver

HOU In: Clarkson OR Smith, Korver
HOU Out: Anderson, HOU 2019 1st

The Cavs are forced into full tank mode if LeBron leaves, which means looking to stockpile assets. Korver’s contract is a steal for his production, but the only teams who would want 37-year-old Korver are going to be teams looking to contend, so the late first the Rockets can offer is basically what they would be getting offered from other teams. Clarkson/Smith are basically just salary filler.

The Rockets then take Korver and execute the following after PG13 opts-in to the final year of his deal.

    OKC In: Gordon, Korver
    OKC Out: George

    HOU In: George
    HOU Out: Gordon, Korver

The logic is simple for the Thunder; if PG13 says he wants to come to the Rockets but wants to be traded here or he will walk for nothing, the Thunder are practically forced to agree, lest they waste a year of Westbrook’s prime.

I don't think either of these trades are unreasonable, and especially think the OKC trade is fair given if PG13 walks they have almost no way to improve their roster, so this would be their best bet.

After this Houston takes care of their own free agents, and ideally use the taxpayer MLE on Tyreke Evans, who has the potential to fill the void being left by trading Gordon. Leaves the roster looking something like:

    Paul/Evans/Clarkson OR Smith

    Harden/Green

    George/Ariza

    Tucker/Mbah a Moute

    Capela/Nene/Onuaku

The Rockets already amazing defensive team just got even better. George is a consistent 3-point threat, and can take the tough defensive assignment just like Ariza normally would. While George and Harden have had their share of struggles in the playoffs at times, Paul has consistently produced and could easily drag us across the finish line as long as ONE of our other stars is having a solid game. Also, acquiring Evans/Clarkson would give us guards who can easily trim his minutes in the regular season to prevent playoff injury again. Thoughts?

Trade him and 1st round pick to SacTown.

Remember, SacTown really wanted him bad. They are a dumb and desperate team.

This is the same dumb team that signed Zach and George Hills amongst many other dumb moves by Divac. This is just a dumb team.

just read an article from a Mavs Website, the writer there says their could be something there.

Sounds like they would prefer to stack draft picks and eat Ryan Anderson’s contract for a year, after which they could flip him at the deadline for a team looking to clear cap and actually acquire more draft capital.

So essentially take a first round pick from the rockets, in a year and half take another first round pick or young talent from a team looking to clear cap space. Worst case scenario you keep him and clear 21mil off your own books for FAs.

Doesn’t sound like a bad plan if your the Mavs

Dude that would make me so happy. They take our trash. Help us improve. And tie up cap space so they can’t come after Capela. Win. Win. Win.
