I was just arguing with one of my friends about this and how Watson right now is the best QB in the game today and better than Mahomes and any other QB right now.

My guess is that KC runs a better offensive scheme than the Texans.

remember how michael vick couldn't read defenses? Then the jolly man gets his hands on him with the Eagles and makes Vick look like a savant, or just take a look at Alex Smith.
Alex Smith with the Chiefs became accurate He screened us to death in 2015, Maclin and Kelce both with 1000/800 yrds a season.
Schemes matter. Andy Reid makes it happen. The proof is in his non low fat pudding.
,Now give him a talented arm like Mahomes or Watson and that offense goes next level. Unfortunately for the Chiefs, bad decisions in the most crucial of times still plague Andy decades after.

Arm strength. Mahomes is in a league of his own.

It matters. He is just as accurate. Not as mobile

While I do feel Mahomes is the better QB, right now the main difference is head coach. Andy Reid is an underrated head coach and offensive coordinator.

Everything mentioned above, plus Mahomes has enjoyed a better offensive line during his time in the League.

Also, Mahomes was able to sit out his rookie season, learn from a vet and not have pressure to turn a franchise around right away.

Andy Reid and better offense is one. Other than that arm strength, pocket presence, and ability to make quicker decisions and get the ball out faster. I'm sure Reid would be able to coach him up on many of Watson's issues.

It's really apples and oranges between those two right now to be honest.

Yeah, love Watson, clearly best thing to ever happen to this franchise, but Mahomes can make throws nobody else can. He's unreal and has the additional benefit of Andy Reid vs BOB. But Watson is definitely good enough to lead a team to a Superbowl victory - now just need to see if Texans will give him enough support in all phases of the game or waste his prime the same way they wasted Andre Johnson and Arian Foster.

The argument if you've gotta make it, is that Pat Mahomes, even with unquestionably better stats and team success than Deshaun, clearly slots into the "System QB" style. He requires a good coach, good OL, and good offensive options at WR TE and RB to get open and make plays after the catch. I mean, at its peak, the Mahomes type QB is still the pinnacle of quarterbacking; see Peyton Manning, John Elway, etc. You want your team to have an indomitable "system" built around its QB's strengths.

Deshaun Watson is a one man army. He's a Russell Wilson type. You can put a **** OL around him, **** receiving options, and a **** coaching staff that's actually coaching him DOWN, and he would still gather his guys Varsity Blues style and make impromptu plays out of the huddle to make his team look better than it actually is. Watson makes something out of nothing. Unfortunately that means that there will be less accountability for all the other parts of the team, and team success is likely to be diminished until you do correct those other elements i.e. coach, line, and weapons. But dammit this is a snakebit football city, and we need to appreciate what little gifts we receive however that happens. Blame the bumpkin ownership.

He's not better, he's just thrown for more touchdowns. That's pretty much it. Deshaun is actually a more complete qb because he can throw it and run it effectively because he reads defenses so well. But the media only cares about the td numbers:

Patty 6,576 yards and 60 tds, 292 rush yards 2 rush tds = 6,868 total yards, 62 total touchdowns
Deshaun 6,642 yards 51 tds, 883 rush yards 9 rush tds = 7,525 total yards, 60 total touchdowns

Plus Deshaun had a slow start last season and that horrendous playoff game, while Patty threw 50 tds and was able to blame his defense for his playoff loss so its more of recency bias plus numbers but by the end of this season (probably by week 7) the media will start to put them in the same sentences. They did it last week on MNF when referencing why Trubisky isn't on the level of Mahomes or Deshaun despite having been drafted before them.

I've seen others make those throws. When dbs run into each other because they were picked off in a "legal" pick/rub route, and there is no defender within 10 yards, you could close your eyes and make a throw.
This reminds of how in 2015 certain media guys were saying what Cam was doing we had never seen anything like it. Never mind that Randall Cunningham was doing it in the 80s vs rules that make today's league seem like flag football. I wonder what happened to those Cam praisers probably rubbing down Mahomes with katsup.

Mahomes is awesome but Andy Reid is a QB whisperer. The careers of Donovan McNabb, 36 year old Jeff Garcia, post-jail Mike Vick, Alex Smith, etc would look very different if they played for any other coach.

Man, I guess it’s hard to take hometown bias out of the equation.
Mahomes arm talent is clearly better than Deshaun while Deshaun is a bit more athletic. The difference in arm talent is more than the difference in athleticism.
Deshaun has worse coaching and still makes mistakes that young qbs make, hopefully those go away with time.
Mahomes has better coaching and scheme which masks any deficiencies he may have.
But calling him a system QB like Elway or Manning is first off super disrespectful to two of the all time best QBs and a compliment to Mahomes.
Quarterbacking is and will always be about reads, ability to beat defenses, accurate throwing. Running is just icing on the cake.

Deshaun has the tools, and has done awesome so far but he needs to overcome poor coaching and ultimately win in the playoffs.

Mahomes has an overall better arm than Deshaun. Deshaun has an elite arm but mahomes has GOAT arm talent. Deshaun is a superior athlete, but mahomes is an above average athlete. The offensive planning and schemes is the biggest difference as mentioned. Mahomes has way more to work with vs Deshaun in terms of offensive play calling and consistency. Flip where they are and I don’t see much drop off for KC.

This is the new Brady vs Manning though. Don’t let the baker and Lamar hype fool you. These two guys will run the AFC for the foreseeable future(of course barring health)
