Being an NBA owner is not easy and unlike other businesses it takes a lot more to sustain it's success. You have to spend in order to compete in today's NBA and judging by Tilman's tenure so far as owner of the Rockets he's been CHEAP. Ain't no way to put it. Either Morey is washed or he's being severely handicapped by Tilman's cheapness.

Something tells me the guy who was able to engineer the Harden and CP3 trades not all that long ago, along with acquiring guys like Lou Williams, Gerald Green, Austin Rivers, and Kenneth Faried mid-season isn't all that washed. And that's not even mentioning the fact that MOST of his biggest moves have come out of nowhere when he's been operating in the shadows. There's only one piece that's changed here in Houston, and it's the top dog. Tilman and his two loud-mouthed sons have a LOT to learn about owning a professional sports franchise, and unfortunately the learning curve seems to be coming at the expense of Harden's prime.

    1) Just to piss you off.
    2) Chance to meet the power dancers
    3) already has red gear from UH affiliation
    4) can fly on the team plane for free
    5) built in retirement home for old Coogs
    6) great per diem for meals - he is tired of Landry's too
    7) Couldn't afford the bribe to get his kids into USC, so bought this instead
    8) easiest way to get good seats to all the games
    9) Wants to go to the White House, after winning a world championship
    10) Big fan of Clutch the bear

He likes to own things and put his name on big projects/companies. Pretty simple ambition and reason tbh.

Screw Tilman and his cheap ass.

No Rockets merchandise purchase for me this year. Will not subscribe to league pass.

Need to see this ****er spend to make our team better before I start supporting his cheap ass

Why are you blaming Tilman for the mess Alexander, D'Antoni and Morey created? Are you "upset" because he won't throw away millions in luxury taxes so you can say he's spending millions in the luxury tax? News Flash - Tilman didn't get to be a billionaire by throwing money away and thanks to the "smartest guys in the room", the Rockets now find themselves in a situation where simply burning money won't make them into a championship team.

he bought it for the same reason many people buy a sports franchise...it’s a status symbol...being 1 of 30 NBA owners is a big deal

Because he had a once in a lifetime opportunity to buy his hometown franchise because Les had a soft spot from him helping in the original transition.

I don't think Tilman was involved in the decision making group that gave Ryan Anderson $80 million dollars in 2016.
I also don't think Tilman was involved in the decision making process to attach a 1st Rounder to Jeremy Lin in order to move in for Chris Bosh, who didn't even agree to a deal with the Rockets yet.
Going back even further, I'm also sure Tilman wasn't involved in the decision making process to sign Lin to a poison pill contract when we could have brought back a better PG in Goran Dragic.

My point? Tilman deserves a good amount of criticism but let's not kid ourselves that we were swimming in championship champagne under Les Alexander.

Totally depends on how you define success.

    1. Team success
    2. Yearly profitability
    3. Overall value of franchise

Most NBA franchises make a profit on a yearly basis, and nearly all of them increase in value at a rate that investors would love to see. While both of those are greatly affected by the success of the team and the stars on the roster, the bad franchises with no stars still increase in value.

Les bought the team for $85M and sold it for $2200M, despite not appearing in the finals over the last 23 years. Anybody would consider that to be a successful investment.

Owning an NBA team is a solid investment, assuming you can afford the buy-in.

It's like that Simpsons episode where Homer buys Lisa a pony and then they realize how much money is needed to feed and take care of it.

Tilman is a businessman. In 10 years the Rockets will be worth a lot more than it is now. If the Rockets win, the value goes up. So at some point, Tilman will open up his wallet, to more than the Houston Cougars.

While agreeing with this, the built up anticipation warrants some of the received criticism of the Rockets front office. Kawhi not go about your business quieter and more professionally? Miami burned us 2 times. Whether we regret that in hindsight is another story, but making guarantees and not executing is sloppy and in Corporate America gets people fired.

As good as Morey is, he's been really quiet in terms of affordably addressing actual team needs. IMO that's an actual small forward and someone to back up PJ Tucker. Heck how cheap does Tyson Chandler have to be to sign him? Sometimes Morey focuses on the big move too much and skips actual good opportunities to cheaply improve his team.

i just think he effectively paid 2 billion to get Harden to let him hang out and go to strip clubs with him.
