So there are courts of law which allow you to settle a lawsuit by donating from your own charity?

 

Surely someone worth $10 billion dollars shouldn't need to steal from a charity to pay his bills. Hmmm.

Honestly it isn't going to impact Trump, just like the e-mail scandal isn't going to really impact Clinton. People already know Trump will lie and cheat and do whatever he can when it comes to money... Likewise people know Hillary Clinton will never take personal responsibility for anything.

That is a distinct possibility. It does fly in the face of the Trump claim that he never loses or settles lawsuits.

Now he not only settles lawsuits, he does it using other people's money and their donations to his charity?

 

Trump is so corrupt, and yet people gloss over his real corruption and focus on Clinton for what??? Emails?????

If this is true, Trump could argue that he didn't lose anything. He uses someone else money to settle the lawsuits. So, in that head of his, he can consider this a win.

Trump Foundation payment seemed to help settle a legal dispute, the trouble began with a hole-in-one. In 2010, a man named Martin Greenberg hit a hole-in-one on the 13th hole while playing in a charity tournament at Trump's course in Westchester County, N.Y. Greenberg won a $1 million prize. Briefly. Later, Greenberg was told that he had won nothing. The prize's rules required that the shot had to go 150 yards. But Trump's course had allegedly made the hole too short. Greenberg sued. Eventually, court papers show, Trump's golf course signed off on a settlement that required it to make a donation of Greenberg's choosing. Then, on the day that the parties informed the court they had settled their case, a $158,000 donation was sent to the Martin Greenberg Foundation. That money came from the Trump Foundation, according to the tax filings of both Trump's and Greenberg's foundations.

It's common for corporations to have a foundation that consolidates and manages its charitable giving. It makes it easier to do the accounting for charitable contributions and to get the full tax benefit. So, I don't really have any problem with Trump using his foundation as the vehicle for donations he has agreed to give. What I would like more explanation about is the "other people's money" business. If all the money comes from the Trump Organization, I don't think there is any problem at all. If other, unaffiliated people donate money (lol, why would anyone give money to the Trump Foundation?), and Trump uses that money to settle claims against his for-profit businesses, than yeah then there seems to be an ethical breach.

 

In some of these cases it does not appear that Trump personally was being sued, but instead it appears that some organization with the Trump name (Trump Club, Trump Organization, Donald J. Trump Foundation, etc) was the defendant or third-party defendant.

 

If it's a foundation? I think the laws on this might be a little trickier than the ethics.
