It's not thrown around casually. You have to look at it from an NBA's perspective where other players try to get the most money possible. It's definitely considered a sacrifice when you look at it that way.

Riley is a result-oriented cutthroat guy, and with a big ego too. Never liked him as a person, even hated him with a passion when he was with the Lakers.

And even if he did, Riley should offer him at 20M considering all the discounts Wade gave them over the years and recruiting Lebron for 2 rings and 3 finals appearances. And even if they did get something, where does it say doing a gesture of goodwill means you don't get something out of it, by the very nature of good will you already are getting something back.
