A lot of people still care. American society has come a long way, but there are many places where "coming out" is still extremely difficult for young people, regardless of what you see on TV or your own particular views on the matter.

The more people who openly do it, especially people with some media visibility, the easier it becomes for others.

The difference between what you wrote and Izzy's case- Izzy DIDN'T have to keep it a secret if he didn't want to.
He lives in Miami for one. Not exactly a gay hating hotbed.
I highly doubt the majority of his readers, viewers and listeners that were unable to tell he was gay would take issue with his preference even if it's not something they agree with.

Now in terms of him doing it for others working in sports journalism/sports media then sure I can dig it. Either way, in 2015, at this point most people don't really give a $hit. Sure there'll be a few that choose to stop reading his articles or watching him on tv but I believe the majority that enjoy his work will keep on reading and watching it.

    Careers used to get annihilated,

    Ellen
    Rosie
    George Michael

Shoot, you didn't even want to play a gay actor in the 80's. It was a possible career ender.

Think Ellen, although she went too far in the end on her first show with all the kissing, broke many boundaries because she was so damn funny. They could not keep her down.

Now you've got Neil Patrick Harris playing heterosexual deviants and it's believable. What a change.

Think their is no risk now, especially for someone who has a voice that has been out there a while. World has moved on.

I think the sex part is still uncomfortable, for example, I still haven't and will not see brokeback mountain. My preference is not to see the scene. Not disgusted. Just uncomfortable like a murder scene. I need to look away.

Very interesting to see how it has changed.

You're the kind of fellow who strolls into the Van Gogh museum in Amsterdam, glances around, yawns, and then declares to no one in particular, "What's all the fuss about?"

Gutierrez could have been angry, hateful and vindictive at the world. He could have been bitter about being different from what society prefers. He could be whiney and preachy about how the world needs to "grow up"

But he showed CLASS and appreciation. He showed respect to the institutions that are even MOST against him. He showed he just wants to be comfortable like any other person does.

(Remove "m2m buttsecks" from it, and you see high character and humility in a human. Thats the beauty of it)

Sometimes I wonder how my life would change, if it would change, if DMo announced to be gay. I was staying awake all night every night for the last 3 years watching Rockets games live just to see DMo, even when he wasn't playing or with the team. I like him as a player that much. Him coming out of the closet would really test my tolerance.

Maybe because it wasn't? He posted this on his own blog and the OP cited from said blog and not from ESPN, Yahoo, etc.

OP was sharing a story and not a "news worthy" article.

I know that it takes courage to come out, and I support it I guess.

But I'm curious how many C-list celebrities are going to be exposed as actually being straight in 20 years and used this culture hype as a stepping stone to becoming a more recognizable face.

I'm going to go ahead and say not very many.

Actually, I won't even hedge: None. I'm going to guess none.
