By "they" I assume you mean homosexuals? Yeah, it's totally weird to make announcements that you're engaged and planning to marry the love of your life. Straight couples would never do such a thing.

There are also different parts of the world where women get beaten for wearing certain attire, people of certain religions get killed just for their beliefs, and kids get abandoned by their own parents. You'll find just about everything depending on which part of the world you're in. I just don't see the purpose of "announcing" youre sexual preference other than for a attention grab

So you don't announce your sexual preference?

You never make comments about women or look at women?

Really? He had to post this...? I respect that it may have been difficult to do so but geeze I hope that people aren't going to be so close minded and care what he does outside of his journalism. Write good articles and throw around BS about the team I love and that is all that matters.

Not in an article or online to the media. If he were heterosexual it is doubtful he would have written an article about it. It is an apples and oranges scenario anyway. Homosexuality has been treated vastly different than heterosexuality.

I understand that gay ppl have to go thru certain obstacles. But we're at a point where some of the most wealthiest men in the world are homosexuals. Professional athletes have come out the closet & gay marriage is legal. What's the point in making a announcement in being gay? Who cares? I

he said in the article he's been out and his family and friends know. He just wanted to prevent anybody else from questioning and asking him about the situation and repeating it 1 thousand times. He posts his story and it's done deal and in his own words.

Lol. Who exactly would question him on this? I'm not sure ppl care that much. But I think being gay, transgender or bi shouldn't be used as a badge of courage. You're gay, be gay & happy with yourself. I'm happy you're happy, that should be the end of it

Not surprised at all. He sits in for Dan Le Batard on his radio show that airs on Fusion on tape delay and he slipped up and outted himself a couple of times. He's not using it to get more tv time and he's actually talented so who cares about his orientation

Not necessarily surprised that he is, but I don't really care if he is or isn't. He's better than half the staff on ESPN, so as long as his work is still good, his personal life doesn't affect me or my viewing of his work.

Coming out publicly as any sort of recognized figure takes a lot of guts but also does a lot of good in today's age. That's why he should be applauded for coming out.

By coming out, he's putting a target on his back. There are still many people sitting atop organizations in the US and globally that discriminate directly and indirectly against homosexuals. The next time ESPN calls on Guiterrez to interview someone like some owner Herbert Simon or Paul Allen, they may demand someone else come because they're not comfortable being interviewed by a gay man. On the other hand, Guiterrez might gain some temporary popularity with liberal-minded folk but ESPN isn't going to automatically increase his salary and guys like LeBron or Harden aren't going to request he interview them strictly for his sexuality.

But by adding to the list of notable figures being gay, it provides just a little bit of more comfort for other gays to come out, especially those who are still in their teenage or college years. The more gay people being both successful and accepted in society there are, the more the uninformed younger generations' attitude might change towards gays.

There is a clear benefit Guiterrez is providing for gays at his own expense here.

^great points at breaking it down. Sure, an attention grab can be good for the ego and can be self affirming, but there isn't any inherent long term gain for Gutierrez's career or even personal life.

That's like saying having a black president or having Oprah, Jordan, and the owner of BET as billionaires means we're at a point where there isn't organizational bigotry against blacks anymore.

There's progress, but not for everyone. So I still don't see where their announcement robs you of anything or of principle.
