Don't forget the Astros have had the luxury of very high picks the past few years. The Rockets were on the outside looking in of the playoffs for a number of years. The Texans have the best player in the NFL and what could be a top 5 defense this year. Their star WR could be top 10 very soon and their often-injured RB is still considered top 10.

Is no one else seeing the Berman/Wilson thing?

This is what it looks like in the thread for me:

Think they are probably looking to do a player for player trade to get some interior OL depth. We have extra depth at CB so that might be where we trade one.

Yeah, I'm at a loss as to how to explain the 2s and 3s...

Casserly, and I think to a lesser extent, Kubiak, didn't seem to really value those picks. Casserly too often treated them like development opportunities - and, frankly, there was some merit to that, given the team as a whole was developing.

Kubiak had a bit of that, too. as he inherited a bad team. But he didn't seem to adjust after the team turned the corner and got good. There's also the issue of his staff failing some of these guys. And, look - teams miss all the time: we can't pretend this is easy.

    But, man...

Here's every 2 & 3 in franchise history; I've bolded players I would rate as above-average. They obviously hit a 3R dinger in '06. Remove that class and...... Warning: NSFW:
    2014 2 33 Xavier Su'a-Filo
    2014 3 65 C.J. Fiedorowicz
    2014 3 83 Louis Nix
    2013 2 57 D.J. Swearinger
    2013 3 89 Brennan Williams
    2013 3 95 Sam Montgomery
    2012 3 68 DeVier Posey
    2012 3 76 Brandon Brooks
    2011 2 42 Brooks Reed
    2011 2 60 Brandon Harris
    2010 2 58 Ben Tate
    2010 3 81 Earl Mitchell
    2009 2 46 Connor Barwin
    2009 3 77 Antoine Caldwell
    2008 3 79 Antwaun Molden
    2008 3 89 Steve Slaton
    2007 3 73 Jacoby Jones
    2006 2 33 DeMeco Ryans
    2006 3 65 Charles Spencer
    2006 3 66 Eric Winston
    2005 3 73 Vernand Morency
    2003 2 41 Bennie Joppru
    2003 3 67 Antwan Peek
    2003 3 75 Seth Wand
    2003 3 88 Dave Ragone
    2002 2 33 Jabar Gaffney
    2002 2 50 Chester Pitts
    2002 3 66 Fred Weary
    2002 3 83 Charles Hill
If you want to argue Swearinger, Reed, Tate, Mitchell, Slaton and Jones deserved to be bolded... not egregious. I didn't bold them because none of them had sustained success. If Steve Slaton had been a... 5th rounder, yeah, he's a HR. But in the 3rd? I need more than one good year.

    Or RB.

Please God let it be both.

They need a guard and they need a RB.

Not even sure why it came up but the Texans organization is well behind the Astros and Rockets.

Think a versatile guard (who can play some center) is the more pressing need but I'd take a RB too.

Because we cut Nix who we drafted in the 3rd last year which led to discussing our lack of success in the 2nd and 3rd rounds.

if pioli doesn't luck into brady, their front office would be horrible up until now.
prior to 2 years ago, their f.o had been horrendous for 7 straight years. But a qb whose arm is still intact and isn't throwing picksixes can cover all the flaws. Insert that redhead Dalton on our 2013 team and it manages 11 wins. Look back at those games, how close they were with picksix fest going on. I have no issues with the drafts, free agent pick ups. I do have issues with the search of our next stable qb. on the other hand, we haven't even tried getting one, so there is that.

Well behind? I know it's not apples-to-apples - and the Astros have a very bright future - but they're on pace to win 54% of their games; the Texans won 56% last year.

Did people check out last year? I'm not arguing it was an all-time year - but I thought last season was a pretty dramatic step forward, and this regime continues to demonstrate that it seems all the world like a smart, progressive outfit. They've significantly improved the back-end of the roster and that defense looks stout.

Easier said than done, but put.... Andy Dalton or Ryan Tannenhill on this team (IOW a fairly average QB - which Hoyer might be) and this is a 9, 10+ win team.

I would have probably said the exact same thing the year before they went 2-14 - but I;d be shocked if this team goes 2-14...

While that is true, they have also used a lot of creativity with the draft money pool to do some unique things and change the way other teams approach the draft. Just think about it, they took Correa number one (when most teams did not see him as the number one guy). They gave him a discounted salary which enabled them to pick up McCullers later in the draft. This year - Correa is the youngest position player in the league and a front runner for rookie of the year. McCullers is the youngest starting pitcher in the league.

They survived the Aiken debacle by acquiring 3 of the top 8 players in the draft this year.
