Yep. This is a bigger story than the QB situaiton imo. You need a lot of talent and depth in this league. It doesnt help that we're trading up and wasting extra picks to select busts.
Very few rookies can make it in the league without very good coaching. Of course the rookie has to be coachable. Players are drafted because the coaching staff believes they can coach and mold them into the type of player they need. Sometimes it's the player, sometimes it's the coaching, other times it's just a bad combination of both.
To those who don't realize that Covington will be used at backup NT.... <blockquote class="twitter-tweet" lang="en"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Christian Covington is a little undersized, but the <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/Texans?src=hash">#Texans</a> liked what they saw out of him more than what they saw from Nix.</p>— Tania Ganguli (@taniaganguli) <a href="https://twitter.com/taniaganguli/status/639857105265139712">September 4, 2015</a></blockquote> <script async src="//platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>
In the eyes of some, everything bad is Smith, everything good was done by one of the coaches. Personally though, I still feel Nix was a good pick at the time. He would have filled a need, and he had upside from where he was picked. Not every pick pans out, no matter what team you are. The pick was universally praised at the time it was made so it's not like they made a move no one agreed with.
they already said, the coaches tell the GM what positions they need, and then the GM and scouts make a draft board, then the coaches rank them by who they would want most.

It wasn't all Smith, but even if Bob and Romeo had most of the input, it isn't working. A better GM to help avoid these mistakes would be nice. The Rockets and Astros have two of the best front offices in all of sports. Then we've got the Texans.
