I wonder if Oliver Perez gets left off the playoff roster. He has been terrible.

I hope so. Too many guys that could help this team to be called up. Perez has hindered not helped and hasn't been here long enough to merit a spot on the pine.

Perez has pitched in 7 games.
He's had 4 good outings and 3 bad ones.

The season still has 30 games remaining.
He has room to improve, but let's not close the book on him yet.

His WHIP as an Astro is 2.750. I realize some of that is because he's been asked to face more than just lefties, but if it came down to Perez or Velasquez, I'd rather have Velasquez.

Well, he only faced one batter in two out of his four "good" outings.

He's not an upgrade over Fields. As the rosters expand tomorrow, Fields will be back up and we'll likely see few appearances from Perez over the remainder of the season.

In the grand scheme of things, i'll take a .500 road trip. In fact, if we can split on the road the rest of the way, our chances are very good that we can make some noise in the playoffs.

And Fiers. AJ is in a great, but tough position in terms of what to do. The September performances will provide some separation, but deciding between McHugh, Feldman, and Fiers based on August is a toss-up.

Decent ball on the road is good enough, few teams play great ball on the road. Would have been nice to finally have a winning road trip though.

Just saying don't close his book yet. Gomez wasn't shining early trade either

This was known before the trade. Stats show Fields was clearly better.

I hope Fields wasn't the standard the FO was expecting.

Gomez has a better career to fall back on.

Perez should be used as a situational lefty only. He should face 1-2 batters when called upon. The post season configuration of the pen will be interesting.

Luhnow: Correa is improving. I think he'll be out there at some point this homestand. He's day to day. We don't want to risk anything. We're being cautious. We're expecting him back in the lineup soon and Springer probably during this homestand.

George is in Corpus. He'll play tonight & tomorrow, take a day off, and then either come back to Houston or a few more games down there. He'll be back at some point.

Luhnow: "Did you see that Carter homer? Scoreboard! Yeah he will be out there virtually every single game. Realistically that home run will carry him through September and the playoffs. We don't want to call Tyler White up, have to keep that 40 man spot open so we can protect Brad Peacock."

Their recent history is virtually the same. Perez has been <3.74 ERA last 4 seasons, two of those seasons were 2.91 and 2.12. Gomez has hit .260+ twice in his entire career.

Oliver has struggled as an Astro. Just saying, it's early, and he still has time to prove himself.

He's 34, what he did 3 years ago isn't that important to me. Last year, he actually struggled against lefties, but was somehow good against righties.

Gomez has been an all-star caliber player for the last 2 seasons.

Some roster decisions have to made today concerning postseason eligibility. Unless a player goes on the DL, they need to be on the roster today to be postseason eligible. Does the team add Fields today? If so, their options would most likely be send Velasquez/McCullers down or DFA Perez/Qualls.

Which of the 5 would you get rid of?

Makes me wonder what the plan was when adding Perez.

If Perez pitched well, who of those guys would've been out. Qualls had already turned his season around. Fields has a <2.00 ERA and it seems McCullers' return was imminent. Maybe they thought Perez was a better fit than VV. He doesn't look like it now, and didn't overly appear to be before the trade either.

Some posters thought we needed a lefty specialist. Not sure who they expected to be the odd man out when additional pitching was added.

The team clearly wanted another lefty specialist. I think the odd man out then was Velasquez, and still think he might be.

I compared Perez to Fields because Fields was sent to the minors not long after Perez was added to the roster. Seems like arguably the team would have been the same or better if it had not obtained Perez, and not sent Fields to the minors. Hence, the direct comparison.

Comparison was understood. I was questioning the team's decision to acquire Perez.
