I think losing Josh Smith is a GOOD thing for this team

It was too much boom and bust with Smith. The busts were really really ugly too. Hopefully DMo is healthy and continues to improve. However, for me the best case scenario this year is Capella continuing to expand his game and possibly seeing some twin towers action with him and Dwight. He showed himself to be an amazingly versatile defender at times.

I think people are right to highlight Smith's defense when evaluating his impact on the Rocket's last season. It definitely made up for a significant amount of Smith's downside (bad shot selection, going cold, free throws). But, even taking defense into account, my gut tells me Smith's leaving is going to be a net positive given the additions the team's made in the off season, plus players coming back healthy.

That said, I'll always have fond memories of the Smith/Dwight lob explosion and Smith/Brewer wreaking havoc against the Clips.

Let's also not forget Jones can run the fast break if we ABSOLUTELY NEED TO. He's not my ideal, back up, back up back up, or even back up back up back up ball handler, but he has shown (forcefully) at times that he can run the break.

ROFL! That pinball pass was hilarious. Purely accidental, but not a bit less awesome.

I'll miss Smith definitely, but let's get one thing clear: it was Dwight guarding Griffin and slowing him down during Game 6. Griffin was torching Smith a majority of the series.

I still believe that as a third playmaker, Smith would be able to contribute to this year's team. But with 5-6 guys in LaLa land who need the ball in their hands to be successful, Smiths game will suffer.

    Exactly. Well said.

Having Smith in the offense this year would detract from the offense as a whole.

His defense and rebounding are good, but I think what he would take away out-weighs what he brings defensively.

Last year, the team with Josh Smith is better than the team without Josh Smith. But this year, the team without Josh Smith is better than the team with Josh Smith.

Josh Smith's game is high risk-high reward. Rockets won't lose any sleep losing him. We got significantly better by adding Ty Lawson. Hindsight.

Good is not even a word I would use to describe his D and Rebounding. He's average a little over 7 rpg over his career, which is nothing spectacular. He can make some plays defensively because he is long but that's it. His value was purely on the offensive side of the ball, and like you said he was the perfect fit on last years team.

His declining athleticism was my main concern.

Tjones and dmo are still getting better.

That has way more to do with how stacked the West is than how important Smith is to this team. Just ask the Spurs how playing great for most of the regular season and in the playoffs doesn't guarantee you'll make it out of the first round.

Given that we're up against the apron right now and might hardcap ourselves, who might have fallen out of the team had Josh Smith resigned? We'd never have courted Hayes in the first place, I'm sure. But, would it mean no Parsons-contract for Harrell? Would Terry get re-signed? Would we have sent out a different package for Lawson?

Hell yes it is a good thing, for many reasons.

We are better off with TJones, DMo and Capella playing, they are on the ascension, Josh is descending - and it puts the locker room chemistry back in the right order.

We have depth right now because we didn't sign Smith so yes, losing Smith helped us for this year even though Smith helped us win big time games - and lose them too - what Smith apologists seem to forget.

Smith's primary value to Houston was two things:
    - He was the 2nd best playmaker next to James Harden....but Lawson is a much better playmaker than Smith
    - He always thought he was the best player in the game even though he rarely was. That helped us win games when everyone else but Brewer & Terry were ready to fold. So Smith's delusions helped us overcome some immaturity by our best players who doubted themselves at times. That being said, we added another A+ player who can carry that same swagger in Lawson, and resigned Terry and Brewer who were the other half of that never say die trifecta including Smith. Add to that a little more battle tested and mature Harden and I think you can overcome what Smith brought.

I don't know if it's a good thing but I think the addition of Lawson far outweighs the subtraction of Smith, add that with Bev & Donatas healthy, two very good players via the draft and Thornton. This is a vastly improved team from the one who reached the WCF.

    Some Rockets fans are like:

    We'll be fine without him.
I agree with a previous poster. He'll be more like the Detroit J Smith in LA.
We'll see how they like some of his boneheaded shots and plays
