I know I contributed & I apologize for it but I really don't think this is the right thread for a gun debate (or right forum). We all have opinions & I respect most of them but I really think we should give condolences in this thread & honor the victims & their families.
He had a great tweet yesterday. Paraphrasing..."I fully support these people going on mass shootings. As long as they start with themselves."
So if guns aren't the problem, let's try this... So he'd have to change his mode of attack if he had something other than a cigarette....do you think that means he wouldn't get cancer? I think that's the point that most hardcore anti-cigarette people don't realize. While cigarettes potentially make getting cancer easy, those hell bent on getting cancer will do so one way or the other....which is why the desire to get cancer is what needs to be addressed more so than the cigarette....especially since the right to possess cigarettes is constitutionally guaranteed. Hopefully that sheds some light on how ludicrous your argument is.
OK, this guy clearly was mentally imbalanced but, and here's the important thing to consider, his record was clean and he did not exhibit any outward signs of mental illness (as far as I know he didn't go around dressed up as the Joker or something like that). As such, under the current laws in place, someone like Vester Lee Flanagan would not have been prohibited from legally purchasing a firearm. And that's what I find so disturbing as I simply don't know how a situation like this could have been prevented. Your can rest assured that this will happen again especially now that Flanagan has shown how to use social media to garner attention to the deed itself. And it will continue to happen unless this country does something concrete to eliminate the "culture of the gun" that is worshiped by so many. I am not optimistic because that would require a level of political courage, social maturity and a unified sense of national purpose that simply does not (and cannot) exist today in this country.
It's interesting how wingnuts who have fought greater access to healthcare like it was the equivalent of being rounded up and sent to socialist re-education camps talk about expanding mental health services like they give a ****.
Is there something about being in America that creates more mentally ill people than the rest of the world? There are psychos everywhere...but psychos with guns are more dangerous than psychos with sharp pencils.
Mental illness is still a joke in America. People suffering from crippling depression and anxiety need to just "grow a pair" and "get over it". There are even very liberal posters on this forum who echo this ignorant sentiment.
I never said it was as easy with a knife. I said he would've killed these two regardless of the weapon as he was a man with intent to kill. He only would've wrestled the woman to the ground as a knife in the back to Adam Ward would've taken him out.
You have absolutely no way of knowing this is true. People with an intent to kill are stopped all the time.
You're right as it's a hypothetical. But it's not a big leap to think that. What are the odds of an ambush gun attack vs an ambush knife attack killing two people? 98% against 90%?
I'm going to assume that the odds for the knife are going to be far less than 90%. I mean unless you're some kind of skilled knivesman(not a word), I don't see him killing one person much less 2. When the cameraman sees the reporter getting stabbed I assume his first reaction would be to use his camera to hit him.
Absolutely not. If you're ambushing two people to kill with a knife, odds are very high that at least one of them is able to escape or survive. Think about it...if im standing there and the lady next to me gets stabbed...I can either attack him and prevent her from getting killing...or I run. Very difficult to kill two people with a knife...unless they are both sleeping.
You are more optimistic than me . . . . 3 hots and cot . . when so many don't have that . . . is not suffer Rocket River
The previous chart had no numbers. I thought it was a joke but people are taking it seriously? last year in kunming.
Slightly different situation because that was the work of 8 attackers...not just a psycho with an agenda. Had those 8 people had guns, you'd have 100 more deaths in that situation.
Flanagan was behind the Adam Ward and would've targeted him first. There's no way he could have defended Alison Parker. Parker would have run, but she probably would not have been able to outrun him to find help. The timing was around 6:45am, businesses are not open, and likely no bystanders. 90% may be a bit too high, but for the situation, the odds were still in Flanagan's favor, unfortunately.
Where are you guys getting 99% for guns? This guy missed several times. On the french train the guy had a AK and a handgun but it turns out he almost killed someone with a knife. Bayonets exist for a reason. Guns aren't death rays. Remember that Zaphod, guns aren't death rays.
