I like this a lot better than if he was simply taking the "good teammate" approach. Failure should breed a competitive desire to get better... which should also push Hoyer to play as mistake-free football as he's capable of.
This. He just didn't do anything to wow the coaching staff. Played it safe and lost the job. He would have done the same thing if he was named the starter in fear of losing the job.
Sure, you could... if you don't have other needs. Coming off a 2-14 season, this team had needs in a lot of places in addition to QB.... and like I said earlier, I think BOB was banking on Jimmy G. being there in the 3rd (which would have met your 1-4 requirement). I do trust him to figure out which type of QB's he likes/can work with... and which ones are the types that usually don't do very much in the NFL (the Ponders, Gabberts, Lockers, maybe Bortles... that get drafted year after year and don't pan out).
Stop comparing this Texans team to Seattle, their success is NOT just because they took a " a leap of faith with that virgin baseball playing qb". Look at how they drafted and built their defense to become the best D in the league and then compare to the laughable picks Rick Smith took the last few years, that's the main difference. QB is the biggest problem for this team on the field. But the biggest problem for this team is off the field, even this team will get a high pick, more than often it will just be a failure.
The last 18 pages boils down to not drafting Carr or trading up to Bridgewater. Instead we get arguments over which average to below average over 27 year old qb with no upside would be a better starter for this team. All the while the guy drafted in that spot is looking like a backup LG. I think we would all rather be in the position to have a young guy who could still be a bust or potential to be good as our qb than a backup LG.
While I agree there aren't many franchise quarterbacks out there, I also think there's a huge rift between starting Brian Hoyer as your quarterback, and starting Blake Bortles, Derek Carr, Teddy Bridgewater, etc. While I understand we don't know anything about the guys I listed, I'd still prefer their quarterback situations over ours. Hoyer does NOTHING exceedingly well, much like Fitzpatrick. I understand Potential hasn't ever won a thing in the league, but at least it harbors excitement of the unknown. With all that being said, I think Hoyer was the right call based on what I've seen so far. Mallett hasn't shown a damn thing that proves he's ready to take the reigns, but that just makes this whole situation even more depressing.
While people are putting their focus on 2 scrub QB to fight for the starting job, another news probably just got buried which could be another embarrassment to this front office again. There are talks in 610 that Jaelen Strong may not even make the team. Yeah, the famous Texans 2nd-3rd round pick failure strike again. Not sure if Bob and Rick Smith are disconnected or at least disagreed on lots of the pick, but even when Strong joined the OTA in May, Bob called him out being "fat and out of shape" already. And his performance so far in the camp did not help either. As I said above, QB is the obvious weakness for this team, but the real problem is much deeper than just that.

It is one of the worst QB classes in years. Jared Goff runs the old Mike Leach offense at Cal, and is the top prospect. And Cardale Jones is a huge project having started only a handful of games at QB at Ohio State. After that it's a group of JAGs
I don't disagree, but note that every team seemingly has holes. The Patriots always have holes.. which Brady and system covers up. And the Texans DID take a QB with a decent pick (4th rounders can definitely pan out) despite needs. I do believe that if you have a guy at QB, and you feel really good about his potential, and you think he might be undervalued, etc., you got to go after that guy strong. If he wanted Jimmy G., should have gone after him harder. I can only assume he didn't want Teddy or Jimmy G. that much, and didn't think they held that much more upside over a guy like Savage, but who knows. I don't trust him to be a QB "guru" type coach yet who can identify that one guy they absolutely want and know is a sure fire success. That definitely might be him, and he is just tinkering around hoping to strike some level of success in the meantime, which is an ok strategy. We shall see. Well then... That sucks!
LOL, let's wait until we get something a little more substantial than idle chatter on 610 before we label him a bust. He came in to OTA's out of shape, BOB called him out, and by all accounts he got the message, dropped 20 pounds and came into training camp in great shape. Caught a TD against SF. Strong isn't going to get cut. LOL. Some of you are just LOOKING for bad news.
It would take some kind of monumental F*up on Strongs part for a 3rd rd WR to be cut during his first preseason ,like he'd have to get caught in the locker room with a pound of cocaine type F*up .. I don't know who on 610 was speculating this but he should be fired immediately
Exactly F Camp and Practice... let's see what happens in the games. Same goes for those Hoyer/Mallet thing. When the games are played we will see who is a bust.
I went back and looked at Hoyer's resume, and surprisingly he's been pretty good when having a full training camp. With our improving defense, I'm optimistic he can guide the ship. Even more so if Arian can come back.
Mallett had the media/local fans behind him to beat out Hoyer but he didn't step up and played too safe. Not saying that Hoyer deserved it but Mallett didn't show us he was any better. BOB chose experience since their was nothing else separating them.
