I agree there's some fat on the 40 man. It's not about today's 40 man roster, it's about the decisions to make this offseason. To get this somewhat back on track, What the Heck, Bobby posted a primer to this year's Rule 5.

    http://whattheheckbobby.blogspot.com/2015/08/astros-rule-5-draft-primer-and-2015.html

11 of our top 30 prospects will be Rule 5 eligible. While guys like David Paulino or Danry Vasquez probably have a low likelihood of being picked and remaining with the big league club, that's still a lot of decisions to be made. It doesn't even account for guys like Tyler Heineman or Matt Duffy who would be easier to stash on a big league roster. Once a Reed or White is called up, they can't be removed from the 40 man, so it means one less one of these guys that can be protected.

Heineman and Duffy are darkhorses for callups this September, since they would need to be protected at the year end anyway. I think the Astros will pick either Heineman or Stassi to keep, and the other will be exposed. Stassi has actually posted an .800+ in July and August after posting sub .600 OPS in April-June.

Mike Hauschild is another guy I worry about exposing to Rule 5 eligibility. He's another unheralded prospect, but he's done nothing but perform at every level. At least one team is probably happy to give him a shot as a 5th man in a rotation next year.

They're on the verge of turning a 72-win team into a division winner. I don't think the term "idiot" will be used too often with this front office over the next several months, no matter how bad Chris Carter looks.

I agree with the premise that White or Reed (or, while he was here, Singleton) should have vaulted ahead of Carter. But given how quickly they've promoted players this year, I have to assume they have a very good reason for not moving on White or Reed beyond them thinking Chris Carter still has something to offer. They *know* he's dead weight; as Nick has pointed out, he's basically the 25th man on this roster right now.

Thanks for the response rez. I was just making sure I wasn't missing something obvious (I tend to do that sometimes, ha!). I respect most of the guys here discussing the Astros, and for the most part, the discussion/dialogue is really good. I'd love to participate in the banter more often, but work and life gets in the way all too often! Until I randomly chime in again, GO ASTROS!!

His BABIP is .387, which is ridiculously high, but he just keeps getting it done. He also has a Biggio-esque 12 HBP this season.

He's really come out of nowhere to put himself on the map. Even with a normalized BABIP, he would be having a good season.

I think I'd take him over Jake Buchanan. The difficult part is guessing whether or not some team will take a guy like Hauschild.

I understand all the possible 40 man/rule 5 implications for calling up a player you "don't have to"... however, at this stage in the rebuild, it should largely be about what would make the MLB team better now.

White/Reed are better 1B prospects than anybody currently on the 40 man roster. Are they going to tear it up and be integral pieces in the playoffs if called up? Doubtful... but again, you don't know what these guys are capable of till they're given a shot.

I'm also playing the odds of losing a Rule 5 pick really causing damage to "this" system, which has been built up enough to withstand such isolated casualties. Like I said before, if they truly value the prospect... they'll find a way to protect him. There's more than enough guys who've already had chances in the big leagues, and may welcome a change in scenery to an organization where they may have less roadblocks (Grossman, Wojo, Deduno, Peacock, Straily, Buchannon, Chapman....)

I agree totally with you about Reed but White I may think about playing him this year. If not then maybe Duffy? He is going to be rule 5 if not protected this offseason. But I also understand management and staying put. Is a difficult position and Reed or Moran stays in the minors for 1 more year it Singleton and White should battle for 1st base over Carter

Making it to AA in his age 19 season... nice. He'll probably start there next year too, but based on what we learned this year, that's still just a call away.

Can't wait to hear Dankush's take on this. I won't hold my breath, though, as he hasn't been seen for awhile around these parts.

    Go figure.

Dean Deetz with 7 hitless innings for QC (2 walks) and 9 strikeouts. Now has a 1.11 ERA in 5 appearances there, liked him a lot in the draft. He was way over slot 11th round pick last year.

    No-no lost in the 9th.

Most dominant win of the year at any level?

Also, 18 runs with 0 home runs. However, they managed 5 triples somehow?
