BoB's message to the fans from today's presser" All we are saying is give him (Hoyer) a chance". Listening to him got me so psyched up for the upcoming season, I'm going to go now and watch some paint dry...
I can't believe how bad people are taking this. I was about as pro Mallett as they get, but I trust O'Brien's evaluations and decision making, and I know that he know massive amounts more than anyone here. I'm pumped for Hoyer. Different system, and I feel like he fits it like a glove. What doesn't fit him will be tailored to him. That's why it's important to name him a starter now. I also think it's funny how butt hurt the media was over a decision not being made yet. Did anyone see Solomon's article? LOL
You are looking at things in a wrong way. Sure, no one will expect the TB Bucs or the Titans will win the Super Bowl this year, heck I am sure most of their fans won't even expect them to make the playoff either. But then again, its about expectation and future and about growth, and it all come down to one thing - hopes. You really think any of the QBs we have now can be our future QB to lead the Texans to a Super bowl? I don't think most of the ppl here will agree on that. But what the Bucs or the Titans fans have that we do not? Hopes. Yes hopes most of the time eventually will lead to failure, but at least you will have the experience to at least cheer for it. No one will enjoy to cheer for a 7-9 or 8-8 season knowing that's probably the best case scenario and your future will not become better.
Not for me it doesn't, but I'm of the crazy ilk who thinks that not all teams have a realistic shot at winning the Super Bowl going into the season. Shocked to find out that makes me silly and stupid, but it's the cross I bear I guess.
I let all my frustrations out when the Texans signed Hoyer. It seemed to me then that Hoyer was more likely to start the season as the starter. OBrien spent the whole of last season with Mallet on the roster and still felt the need to sign Hoyer and pay him more. I never understood why they didn't stick with Fitz until they found a QB they were confident in. Coach must have really hated something about Fitzpatrick. Anyways, that ship has sailed. I just hope the team doesn't get stuck in a cycle of trying to over-achieve with under-talented QBs.
This pretty much establishes that Mallett sucks. Houston is one of those teams without a QB, which means they are in NFL purgatory until they find one.
And you know what happens when those QB's don't turn into possible future HOF-type QB's? The team has to start all over again, with a new coach, new QB... hell, both of those teams had "hope" just as of 3 years ago in new QB's, and had to reset the plan. The Texans have really only gone through the high draft pick QB that failed only once... whereas half our own division has gone through it multiple times in the last 5 years. In reality, how many QB's from "this" era are sure-fire locks (as of now) of going to the HOF? Peyton Manning, Tom Brady, Drew Brees, and maybe Ben Rothleisberger (although he's more Jim Plunkett at this time). The truth is, no matter how much "hope" you have... the odds are that QB is not going to be a franchise-type player no matter how high they're drafted. Same goes for current former #1 picks in Matt Stafford, Eli Manning, Cam Newton... who all may carve out very nice careers (and one of them a SB champion).... but they still all need supremely great teams and great coaching to win.
Good luck with it. The NFL is the most parity-rich of all the sports leagues. Any fan with an expectation beyond being in playoff contention is setting themselves up for disappointment - just ask any Colt/Bronco fan during their respective Manning eras.
90 QB Rating with 27 Ints and 3500 yards passing means: 320/485 3500 yards 38 TDs 27 INTs I'll take that.
Bus accident tomorrow, I think Aaron Rodgers is a lock. Him, Manning and Brady are heads and tails better than every other QB of their era. Luck is a tier below with a limitless future (unfortunately). I don't think people realize how good those guys are. Two top five all-time guys, with pretty good "best overall" cases. And Rodgers will be right there with them in 5-10, barring a drastic drop-off. From there... I think Brees is on par with Rivers, Roethlisberger, etc. (I know this adds nothing to the discussion... just enjoy talking football....)
Hoyer could have done 30% to 40% worse so far and still get the start Last preseason game Savage looked the best to me maybe he should get the start.
If BOB thinks Hoyer is better, so be it. He doesn't have any ulterior motives, so apparently Mallet can't cut it. I expect Hoyer to have his best season and the Texans to win 7 wins. A healthy Foster would add 3 more wins.
The truth is, most of the sports teams must provide their fans this type of hope to be a motivation for them to come to the game. See Rockets and the Astros as example, both went through a period of time being mediocre to really bad, but still, even as of now they have not reached the top yet, fans are coming back and ready to embrace both of them because they see hope. Sadly for the Texans, the situation is different. They are a franchise in a sport that can generate huge amount of revenue regardless of your performance. There are very little incentive to be better, let along to be the best. They are similar to the type of business like the government own enterprises many years ago in many countries - bad management, lack of new idea, always behind the curve, ect. But so what, they are the monopoly business and the profit is guaranteed. Its not only the Texans are running in such way, but there are many other NFL franchises are doing similar things also. Sure they are some of the richest franchises in sports but they are far worse in management that other smaller teams in a much competitive environment.
Oh, yeah - for sure. I think Roethlisberger is a lock, too. But I don't think either are as good as Manning/Brady/Rodgers. Eli will be very, very interesting. His regular season numbers are not, by even very conservative standards, HoF worthy.
