Well I wouldn't say pizza is boring. Heck we have more interesting new pizza places opening than fajitas places here in Houston. But I do get the argument for it. It does make sense
Nothing beats the $6.99/lb fajitas (with Houston Zest coupon) circa 1994 from the now defunct Fandango's on Westheimer. Maybe my palette was much simpler as a kid, but my fondest restaurant memories growing up were at that place.
10 years ago it was Teotehuacan, El Tiempo and Anyplace But Lupe Tortillas. I actually would love to know the answer to this question now.
1) El Tiempo 2) Ninfa's on Navigation (they are actually back to making good food again) 3) El Real (The wood roasted whole gulf snapper fajitas in particular, thats the only kind I ever order, so I can't judge the rest)
What is that? A snapper combo with fajitas? For years Tampico has done that amazingly but minus the fajitas.
I think Tex-Mex is our signature food... who doesn't love Houston's spin on Mexican food... Ninfas, El Tiempo, Chuys, Papasitos...
It's more correctly saying our State Capitol has successfully produced the most profitable BBQ joints in the state. But I'm here as a witness to say we are too hard on ourselves wrt brisket throughout the state. You can't go to another state and get brisket like you can in dozens upon dozens of joints in Texas. We just downgrade them unfairly due to what the State capital can sell profitably
Well when thinking of other cities / states sig foods, it's not always neccesarily the best or most popular among the citizens, but more so Iconic to the state/city. New york hot dogs Chicago pizza Louisiana gumbo/crescents/seafood Maine Lobster Kentucky fried chicken I don't think Houston in specific has a famous meal, but for Texas as a whole, when people outside of Texas think of our most iconic food, I would think it's Texas barbecue.
I think New York pizza and Chicago hot dogs. Deep dish pizza shouldn't be considered a pizza. It's almost like a pie.
love me some buccees, but I would imagine Shipleys is more popular in Houston. Buccees is growing fast though
El Tiempo, to me, is like a B. Ninfas is a definite A. But El Real.... personally, that's like a D+. Do most of y'all like El Real?
