I was saying in relation to the players on the Astros that I initially named (Marisnick, Tucker, Marwin)…not in relation to other stars around the league. And my comment had to do with Correa being "swoll"…Kid is strong, no doubt, but he still has plenty of room to fill out.
I know he does, but only because the Orioles needed a 3B, not a SS. He was a SS until the Orioles called him up.
Here is a good article as to why Machado still being at 3B is just dumb. http://www.vavel.com/en-us/mlb/5166...s-should-move-manny-machado-to-shortstop.html
Tonight Daz is 1-1 with 2 BBs and K. Tuck is 2-3 with 2 RBIs. I am going to love tracking these kids over the next couple years.
Yes, it's easier to find a 3rd baseman to put up "3B" numbers…but the Astros don't have that. If you have 2 stud SS…but only one of them is capable of playing 3B, you make the switch. Obviously, if the Astros had someone that was able to man the third base corner for years to come, there wouldn't be any talk of Correa to third. However, when you have two potential bad asses in Bregman and Correa, you need to fit them in the lineup…and that's when it makes sense to move the more capable player to 3rd base. If Bregman never lives up to his potential, then this is a non issue. Or, if the Astros find someone that can hold down 3B in extraordinary fashion, then Correa stays at SS. You have to put the best lineup you can onto the field…you don't keep Correa at SS so you can have an average joe at 3rd….when moving Correa to 3rd can net you a stud at SS. It's really that simple.
At this point, Moran looks like the much better prospect to man 3rd for years to come. I hope Bregman becomes more than what he has shown thus far, which is a good on base guy. Certainly not a bad ass.
There's just as much potential for Bregman to be a stud as there is for Moran to be a stud. Let's not forget that you're going off of a mere first 50 games of Bregmans career…while Moran has play 4x as much pro ball.
We don't need Bregman to be a stud. If he can maintain good batting average, and high OBP he will be a very valuable player, even if he doesn't hit for much power. Correa and Springer need some people to drive in. Many high picks fail to even impact the majors, much less become a stud. If you get a good MLB player it's a win.
The scouts that were pro Moran pre draft felt his power would come around eventually. With his recent power surge since his comeback from injury somewhat suggests that may be happening. I'm not trying to compare Bregman and Moran, as they are obviously different players. I was just pointing out that we have a legitimate 3B prospect in our system, so there is no need to move Correa to 3B and let an inferior player take SS.
From a Ben Badler chat yesterday. Not sure if posted. Steve (New orleans): Now that A.J. Reed has proven himself in AA, how high will he rise for next year's prospect list? What's his ceiling as a hitter? Thanks! Ben Badler: He’ll be very, very high on my list. He hits everywhere he goes, draws a ton of walks and has enormous power that isn’t just Lancaster magic. I think it’s Joey Votto, Paul Goldschmidt type upside. Bill (San antonio): Is Francis Martes legit? Have read glowing reviews on him this year. Good throw in piece the astros got in that cosart deal. Ben Badler: He could become a No. 2 starter. The Marlins scouts and lower-level coaches knew what they had, and we had him as a DSL Top 20 prospect the year before, but still a great job by the Astros scouts identifying him in the GCL and by the front office insisting that Martes be included in the deal. Joe (Beaumont): Can we truly say now that mark appel is a bust? Doesn't seem to get results no matter how good the stuff is. Is it more mental than anything else? He admitted being entitled early on in his first year. Reliever at best? Ben Badler: Disappointment, yes, but it’s premature to call him a bust. Would let him continue to develop as a starter for another year, then reassess the option of making him a reliever and hope the light bulb goes on, a la Wade Davis.
He has more natural power, but I wouldn't expect him to be more than a 15 HR guy. Personally, I don't expect him to be much more than Chris Johnson. Bregman has less natual power, but also has more speed, & better BB & K rates. He also will have more range defensively. I see him being similar to David Eckstein. Moran will likely have a chance to prove himself before Bregman. If he plays well, the team will stick with him. If he doesn't, then Bregman will get a shot.
