Thanks... that's exactly the kind of stats I asked for earlier... where did you compile that data from?

Because if you keep Carter for another 12 days, you can keep him on the September roster and then trade him in the offseason. If you DFA him now, you lose him without any compensation.

Fangraphs and a couple other sources have done it. Here is one article, http://www.thepointofpittsburgh.com/how-much-an-mlb-prospect-is-worth-updated-trade-surplus-values/, that did a good job of looking at these lists though i think their future WAR inflation rate of 8% is a little high. On the 70% number, that came from fangraphs in an article by Jeff Sullivan at http://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/how-many-good-players-were-good-prospects/.

    Interesting stats.

To stop the confusion, McDonald said Martes is in the top 40 in that article. So anywhere from 27 to 40. Not that it really matters but that gives you a narrow enough range.

If a player is on the active roster on 9/1, but then is demoted and recalled during Sept, can they still be on the playoff roster?

Also, is there a place to look if a player still has options? I think it's possible Carter still has an option left. If so, they could (in theory), option him before the end of this month and then recall him when rosters expand.

McDaniel said Martes would slot top 40.

Yes. Any player on the 40-man roster who has been on the active roster on or before August 31st is potentially eligible for postseason roster.

I don't think that's right. I think it's any player who IS on the 25-man active roster (or DL, etc.) on Aug 31st is eligible. For example, if McCullers is still in the minors on the night of Aug 31st, he wouldn't be eligible.

I think you are right. I was reading this part:

"Players who do not participate in one game in the Majors before September 1 with the team's organization of the regular season will be declared ineligible for the team's 25-man active roster of the postseason and must be placed on either the restricted list or the secondary squad."

which made me think he'd be fine, but before that says active roster on 8-31 & DL.

I've wanted to find this before also but haven't been able to. By looking at Carter's transaction list on his mlb.com player page, it would appear that he does have an option year left. If so...I can't possibly imagine why they haven't exercised that yet.

I've been defending the org by saying they shouldn't DFA him necessarily with just a few weeks until rosters expand. But if you could've optioned?? I'll be a bit upset.

    You get 3 options, and he was optioned in 2010, 2011, & 2012. I don't think he qualifies for a 4th.

For playoff rosters, it works like this.

    Any player who is either
    - on the 25 man major league roster, or
    - on the disabled list (7, 15, or 60 day DL), or
    - on the suspended list, or
    - on bereavement leave, or
    - on military active duty

If a player eligible for the playoff roster gets hurt before the end of the season and cannot play he can be replaced by anyone in the organization regardless of if they are eligible for the playoff roster or not.

So hypothetically the Astros could place Jake Marisnick on the 15 day DL on August 30th. Then they could recall McCullers and place him on the active roster. When they turn in their active Roster list on the 31st those 25 players (Including McCullers) would be automatically eligible for a playoff roster. As soon as Marisnick serves his 15 days on the DL and is returned to the expanded active roster he too would be eligible to be placed on a playoff roster. The Astros will also be able to replace anyone that is listed on the 60day DL with someone from the organization if that player is still injured when the playoffs start and he was on the 60 day prior to August 1st.

Tyler White hit a 2-run single in his 1st at-bat of the evening. He's now on an 11-game hitting streak.
