I believe that 2012 college draftees, 2011 HS draftees, and international players signed in 2010 (if they were under 19, and depending on their signing date) will be eligible for the Rule 5 draft for the first time this year.
International players signed in 2011 (assuming they signed before the 2011 Rule 5 draft in December) would be eligible this year. Lots of guys will be eligible.
I don't understand the rationale of hurting a team that is in a pennant race because you want to get a small return for Chris Carter in the offseason. Counter-intuitive.
Can't afford to have dead weight like Carter on the team for the stretch run when he almost assuredly won't be back next year. I would DFA him, call up White, and then platoon Valbuena/White.
Kiley McDaniels of Fangraphs released the 2015 In-Season Prospect Update today. Francis Martes, Alex Bregman with FV of 55 would be ranked ~25-30. AJ Reed, Kyle Tucker, Daz Cameron with FV of 50 would be ranked somewhere in Top 125. No mention of Appel.
The Astros have 3 players named Jose Hernandez in the system. I think Oz Ocampo and his staff may be on to something by attempting to corner the market on baseball players named Jose Hernandez.
I'm anxiously awaiting his inevitable response saying that we should have taken him up on his bet, but we were too poor to do so.
It is August 19, and I still have no earthly clue why Tyler White is not in an Astros uniform starting immediately. Are they waiting for the roster expansion?? If that's the case, why is the local media saying White most likely isn't going to be called up for that?? What kind of compromising pictures does Chris Carter have to keep being included on this roster?!?
Luhnow was just talking on The Matt Thomas show and basically said if Tyler White or AJ Reed are called up it won't be until after September 1. The only roster move before that will likely be clearing a spot for McCullers to get back in the rotation.
To be fair, CC is likely still booted from the postseason roster to make room for Springer, right? If we called up White, who would we remove in October for Springer? We already have to make another move for McCullers..and maybe VV.
If it's that inevitable that he doesn't make the October roster, then what's the point of letting him stink up the place now?? White/Reed obviously aren't locks to smash for the next month in the Majors, but I guarantee they wouldn't be worse than Carter right now.
Looking at the list provided in the link, the last player(Frazier) is ranked 26 with a FV of 55. Also, I like this bit...
A lot of obsession over minor league rankings... would be interesting to see if anybody has looked at the % of top 50 or top 100 prospects that do well in the big leagues. It can't be "all" of them... or there'd be a lot more good players in the big leagues every single year.
I just wanted to come in here and say that anyone who doesn't actively follow the Astros' farm system is a bulls*** excuse for a fan, and should be ignored by real fans like us. In my case, I mean yeah, I haven't followed the farm system at all - but that's just cuz of my hectic schedule of late. For every other Houstonian though? They have no excuse.
You can't send down any of those. Qualls is allowing a .392OPS since coming off the disabled list. Tony Sipp has a 2.23 ERA. Carter sucks, but hard to imagine that finally being what gets him cut.
They are not necessarily Top 30. Kiley's ranking last season had FV 55 players ranked from about 30 to 80.
