My major is management information systems (MIS). Considering adding CS as a minor.

Would minoring in CS be a good idea? Could I learn some valuable skills (that could translate into a job coupled with my mis degree) after the 2 extra semesters it'll take to get the CS minor?

    Advice appreciated.

I think it's a good idea. Don't take my word for it though, I don't work in IT.

I think it's a good idea, better than Creative Writing... but I don't work in IT.

I'm studying CS currently, its a lot of math/theory and algorithm optimization at this point. Not sure if that will be very helpful working in IT.

You probably don't have to code **** in the type of IT you will be working in and a cs minor would likely be of zero benefit to you unless you like it.

But I don't work in IT.

As a software engineer. Yes. Do it.

Feel free to ask questions if you want more pro/con info

btw, i majored in mis/minored in cs.

don't know about the two more semesters... can't do summer school? that's leaving earning potential on the table if you're graduating with mis. 70+k out of school (depending where you go to school) so factor that. also, look at courses online from udemy. that's all it is. i can write a **** ton on it but im currently writing code for work that's due tomorrow. :)

Maybe fill in some of the gaps with MIT OCW or some MOOCs.

Well please do so tomorrow or whenever you have the time, I'd appreciate it man.

I'll prob do summer school. Basically my question is what skills would I be learning with the CS minor courses that will translate into what I'm already learning with MIS?

MIS doesn't teach you a whole lot of coding, so how did you learn to become a software engineer.

Feel free to answer whenever you get the time.

    Thanks man.

Yes, it is a good idea.

In fact, an even better idea is to major in computer science.

Computer science is a more valuable/usefull degree than IT/MIS.
