Probably not as that ball had zero chance of being close. Since he was doing that on some hits recently, maybe that's just what happens when he thinks it going to drop in. Thus he's basically going to bat-flip on "good solid contact" now.
Ok... Things can be said about how Marisnick would probably have saved Kazmir in the 1st and in the 3rd... Gomez needs to come in a little, Kazmir doesn't allow to many hard hit balls. I think Gomez has cost the Astros 3-4 runs.
Except the ball he played in the first wasn't a bloop... it was a sinking liner. Nah, even if you expect him to make that play, which still would have required a diving catch (from either him or Marisnick), that's only 1 run (which he subsequently has somewhat accounted for directly with his bunt-hit and speed on the base-paths). I tend to not excuse starting pitchers for unearned runs allowed either... since good pitchers need be able to pitch around mistakes from time to time.
That would have been the third out and we've all seen Marisnick make that play. Not saying anything more than that but Gomez needs to get it together.
Which is why I put the excerpt about excusing pitchers from unearned runs (as if they are simply allowed to be "bad" after an error because it does't count as much)... and that wasn't even an error (and would have been a great play by Marisnick). Gomez does need to start hitting... we've all established that. But faulting him for not making spectacular catches is a bit much (especially since making spectacular catches is about the only positive thing he's done with this team).
What part of playing deep with Kazmir on the mound is hard to get? It's not necassary. How many bloopers have you seen with the guy as opposed to deep fly balls? There are probably metrics to rate this sort of play and Gomez played deep. It was a miscue (unfortunate miscue) but a miscue. Kazmir even reacted to the second ball that dropped in front of gomez (slapping his glove, rolling eyes, etc) because it was catchable at a normal/regular outfield shift. It's not spectacular if you just not get to technical. Basics.
