Well ****. I'm not sure what happened, or if at some point I used the wrong copy to install my windows 7 (I have a legit Ultimate edition / key, but might have had pro on my pc....ugh), that I'm going to have to reinstall windows 7 ultimate to have that key recognize, since the other one isn't activating.....then proceed to install windows 10.

Sure glad it upgraded by itself. :(

    Task Bar
    • Can swipe up when auto-hidden. Awesome - about time.
    • Had to get rid of the crappy search bar - hide search
    • Clock does not show date - just the time :(
    Internet Options
    • Wi-Fi sense?
    • Default settings allow you to share network setting with your Outlook, Skype and Facebook contacts - what?
    • I like the idea of the more convenient Wi-Fi data metering

    Internet Explorer
    • Got rid of the whitespace at the top
    • Dark theme
    • Autocorrect
    • Find tool has a "whole word" and "case" selection
    • The tab, address and favorites (bookmarks) bars are twice as thick as Chrome
    • Dark theme doesn't really distinguish each bar from the next - it's like a giant black bar at the top
    • I can't Ctrl + Delete - WTF?
    • Laggy keyboard response
    • Take notes (screen snips, highlights, written notes) and save
    • Hub includes reading lists (nice), downloads, and a somewhat difficult to read bookmarks navigator

So far, MSFT did a good job of getting rid of Baulmer. As far as the new IE (Edge), all this shows is that they are playing catchup - not that they are interested in leading.

For me the clock shows both date and time. Not sure why it doesn't show up for you.

Wi-Fi sense can be handy in terms of sharing networks with friends. I had Wi-Fi sense on and a friend came over and didn't need a password for my router. You can easily turn it off if you don't like it.

Edge is actually beating Chrome in some speed tests. Remember, Edge isn't a new version of IE, it is a completely new browser. It's still in the Beta stages if you ask me, but the fact that it is right now faster than Chrome in some areas and is being tooled to work with Chrome extensions is great.

Well... at least you end up with a clean install! That's something to look forward to at the very least. :p

Have you tried to go to the windows store and download Windows 10 PRO? I gave directions on how to active windows from a clean install. You need to download windows 10 pro from windows store and after that installs you'll be activated.

I looked in my task manager to see what was lurking. I figured MSFT might be up to no good. And there it was - CandyCrushSaga.

Windows Key > Candy > Right Click > Uninstall

I found a major flaw. I shut my laptop (closed the lid) last night, opened it this morning, and it did not request a password to access my account. Before, when I had Windows 8.1, my laptop always required a password after waking up. I had to go into the Control Panel and change the settings back to what they previously were.

I'm getting noticed to free up storage space by deleting temporary files like my previous version of Windows. Nice try MSFT.

Is anyone else having the issue with their index. It's not letting my dad pull up his files that he was able to do previously.

My wifi stopped working a few days after loading windows 10

    1) checked the wifi switch - nope
    2) rebooted router and laptop - nope
    3) went searching for the connection - none - not even neighbors - hmmm
    4) ran a diagnostic - card is fine
    5) saw that windows auto updated on me and one of the items was wifi/blutooth windows update for Dell products (which my laptop is one)...hmmmmm
    6) system restored before the update - bingo - wifi is back
    7) went searching on how to shut off auto-updates

I knew I was going to have to update sooner or later but I regret going this soon.

This will sound geeky so my apologies in advance.

You should first check up at support.dell.com for a specific Windows 10 driver for your wifi adapter. If there isn't one, then next check the device's manufacturer's support page. I ran into this issue on my sister's Thinkpad E520 which used an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 adapter that will not get a Windows 10 driver so I had to get her a Netgear USB wifi adapter and disable her onboard wifi adapter.

As for shutting off auto-updates, Think Geek has a solution that can be found here: http://www.howtogeek.com/224471/how-to-prevent-windows-10-from-automatically-downloading-updates/. Essentially he says to setup your connection as a metered connection which stops Windows 10 from auto downloading updates.

Any idea what page that was on? It's worth a try, and if it doesn't work I'll try to use my Ultimate edition and upgrade from there.

(it's an OEM I received via Microsoft training, so I have to have a previous version to install it ....it's not a windows anytime...so major pain of installing vista / xp to install Win7 ultimate...to upgrade to win10)

when you are on the activation page (where it shows that this computer in not activated) you should see a link to the store. Click that link and it should take you to a page that has windows 10 pro (to the left). Download that and install it and then see if you are activated.

Sorry if this is already answered, but just bought a laptop with 8.1 and trying to upgrade to 10. The laptop only has a 32 gb drive, its telling me i need to free up 2 gb of space but I've got 11 gb free. Can i download the install to a microsd?

You can try using the Windows Media Creation Tool to create a USB or DVD installation drive/disk. Instructions can be found here: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-10/media-creation-tool-install. That 32GB drive is cutting it really close - you'd have almost no space for programs or files. I'd consider getting a 120GB or larger drive. These drives are pretty reasonable with 120GB drives in the $40-$50 range and 250GB drives in the $70-$85 range.

Thanks, I figured out what the problem is. OneDrive copied 8 GB of stuff onto the laptop. Put it in offline mode and its going now. My wife is really only using it for school so not too concerned as long as it can run office and do Internet.
