Hard to compare him to anyone, reminds me of Edgar Martinez (not as good obviously) and a little of Mike Lamb. He is a line drive hitter. He hits the ball very hard but doesn't hit a whole lot of homers, but does hit a lot of gapers and has excellent command of the strike zone. He draws walks and works the count well. He wasn't a big prospect so he is ignored.... Still I wouldn't be shocked if he ends up a better hitter than a lot of guys ahead of him like Santana and Phillips and others. He may flameout, but I could also see him hitting 300 with a 380-390 OBP.... Which would make him a nice DH.
Boston had a pretty good run with Kevin Millar playing a lot of 1B as an ok power, good OBP kind of guy. They had a pretty good DH back then too, so a White/Reed combo would be a poor man's version of that I guess.
It will be interesting to see how we upgrade the offense entering next season. Hard to imagine us adding any starters that aren't already pitching for us, we're overstaffed as is, so the lineup should be the focus. Gomez, Correa, Springer, Altuve and I imagine Lowrie at 3rd (I've personally seen enough) are locked in. That leaves 1B/DH/C/LF. I honestly don't see us making a splash at catcher, the combo of Castro/Conger seems solid enough (that could still change), and it's a light hitting position overall. Reed, Moran, White, Singleton, Tucker and Gattis could all be 1B/DH contenders, but none of them can play a competent LF. That to me would make adding a reliable contact outfielder the primary offseason target, because we have no good in house options. Unless one of the great ones shakes loose, I don't see us going after a 1B.
I think Moran and Reed will play triple a next year. White, Singleton, Valbuena and Carter will battle for that spot at 1b/DH. Tucker has the leg up to play LF. I think Rasmus has done enough for us to consider him back with the team. Valbuena can play 3b/2b/1b so he could be a nice trade bait for another team. Yankees, in that ballpark could be an interesting team for him. If he stays with us, then he will start as a regular unless other player does a better job. Again team will try for Singleton to win the job, but, he needs to start hitting fast. Gattis, i can't believe he has not been able to use the Crawford Box more. I hope he turns it around and becomes that .800 OPS guy he was for the Braves last year, but i have not seen that from him so far. White is an interesting possibility as he is a guy we need on this team, a player that will work counts and walk. Catching, the combo of Castro/Conger is pretty good. I wish Hinch would use Conger more as DH against righties that struggle vs lefties.
Some thoughts from Adam Everett on the broadcast. (On Correa) This kid was probably ready last year. He has the it factor and brings it day in, day out. Tony Kemp, Matt Duffy, A.J. Reed, Colin Moran and the list goes on. J.D. Davis, the newest pick Alex Bregman. We got a bunch of guys down there. Bregman - he's a baseball player. What I mean is he goes out there, he's instinctive, wants to get better, wants to learn. He'll be a good one. He has work to do. He can get better and will as he matures. From what I've seen, both (offensive & defensive). He won't wow you day in, day out per se but over the long haul, you'll say "I like watching him play." He has a lot of things you'd like for your guys to have. It's a matter of him maturing and getting out there and playing. One guy who you say "Wow"? A few guys but A.J. Reed. He's playing 1st, can hit. We tell him "We gotta play some defense now" and he goes out and does that too. To see the way he can swing the bat, he'll be special. Our pitchers in the minors, it's fun to watch. They make our IF/OF & offense better. Good pitching, that's how you get to the playoffs and win. That's where we have the upper hand in the minor leagues.
So do we wait until September to bring up AJ Reed? Marwin is decent but brings almost no power, and Valbuena/Carter are too inconsistent. First base is too important of a position to have as such an offensive sieve.
Bregman has a line of .264/.312 in a hitter friendly league. He def has a way to go. People who are saying he'll be ready next october arent thinking.
Was he b****ing and moaning? Looked to me like all he did was give the guys stats, say they weren't impressive, and that he wasn't anywhere near ready yet.
Still got Singleton and Tyler White who deserve a look as well. Likely Singleton is brought back up and maybe White. Next season the Carter and Valbuena era will hopefully be over and guys like Reed, White, Moran, etc will all get their shot in ST.
I wouldn't judge Bregman at all until the end of next season at the earliest really. He's just learning to be a pro player right now.
I guess I don't get your point. The poster wasn't bashing Bregman. He just said he doesn't look ready. Would you disagree? Maybe I'm missing the context and the poster said something else in the past but as far as I can tell, he's not saying Bregman is not going to be a good player. He just isn't major league ready at this point. I don't know that I care to see anymore of Singleton. Not sure that guy will ever be a quality big league player. He can hit the cover off the ball in AAA but for some odd reason, he just can't seem to carry that to the major leagues. I don't know much about Tyler White. Got any thoughts on him? And yes, I really hope by next year the Carter/Valbuena era is done for.
Alex Bregman has been a professional baseball player for two months. It's a little too early to complain about performance, would you agree?
I'd like to make peace and end the flame war. Yes, there is no way Bregman can be accurately judged at this point. He certainly doesn't appear to be big league ready anytime soon, but he most definitely could turn into something special. I'm just curious what the heck we are going to do with him. The way Correa is playing at SS it would seem foolish to me to move him. Altuve likely isn't going anywhere and can't play another position other than 2nd. Do we put Bregman in left? Do we trade him? Good problem to have, but it will be interesting to see how they handle him.
Never did I say he was going to be a bad player or whatever just stating that he has a ways to go. I wish instead of posting stats of a player whenever they're doing good, we also post it when they are doing bad also for a better evaluation thats all. When Moran was on fire everyone knew how well he was playing, now that hes struggled in the past 5 games not one post about him. Its vital to know the good AND bad
