Patrick Sandoval (not Edgardo Sandoval!) started for the GCL squad today. Final line: 1.1 IP, 2 H, 2 ER, 2 BB, 1 SO, 1 HR. Bring back E. Sandoval! P. Sandoval is a bum!
Colin Moran is producing some impressive stats. Post the allstar game in 132 AB, he is hitting .371 and a .432 OBP with an OPS of 1.023. Plus he is displaying some HR power, hitting all of his 5 HR in July and August. Pre allstar game in 138 AB, he was hitting .261 and .323 OBP with an OPS of .670. Which was not impressive at all!!!! Probably this type of showing is what caused him to drop out of the top prospect lists. But, it seems that the Astros saw something in Moran few others did. They were thought to be debating between Appel and Moran for the #1 pick. The Marlins saw a glimpse of Moran and gave him away to the Astros for Cosart; they didn't have the patience. And to boot, the Astros raided the Marlins system for Marisnick, Martes, and the pick that became Cameron (because the Diamonbacks were likely going to take Cameron before the Astros 2nd round pick would have come up). I know a lot of people are not too excited about Moran yet, after all he has had such a lackluster showing for his minor league career, which was very average showing (nothing special). But these past games, Moran has made strides that are leap and bounds monumental. I think that Moran is going to be a MLB career .320 + hitter, with 20 to 30 HR pop ability. And he's going to dart up the Astros prospect list very soon. I'm thinking Moran will be in quite a few batting title chases in is career....... I know some people have been wanting to compare Kris Bryant with Correa, but the argument might end up being who the better 3rd baseman in the 2013 draft, Moran or Bryant. I know it's a little early for a lot of fans, but I think if Moran has figured it out, he is going to be a stalwart at 3rd base for the Astros next 10-15 years. Heck Moran might be the starting 3rd baseman for the Astros as soon as next season!
And what I like about Luhnow, is that when people started prodding him about selecting Appel over Bryant, he said that they stuck to their evaluation system. They were very comfortable in their talent assessment, and what they do is go back and see if they missed something that could be useful in the future. Hearing constantly that Moran was rated higher than Kris Bryant was mind boggling. But I think what Moran is doing now is what Luhnow and his people knew he could do all along. MLB hall of fame careers aren't created in the Minors, because the minors are meant as training ground for the players.
@ Rocketpower2, yeah Kool-Aid is so refreshing on these hot Houston Summers! I'll even have a 2nd glass......
A third baseman that is a career 320-330 hitter with 30 homer power.... That would make him, the first thirdbaseman ever like that.
Well, I was thinking more like .320 averaging 20 HR a year. But he could reach 30 HR in the better year..... The higher the BA the lesser the HR's and vice versa... So if he goes for 30 HR, his batting average would go down to .305. But HECK, if he were to hit .290 and got the Astros 15 HR's a year, everyone would be stoked! He is one of the prospects that is very intriguing. Simply because of his hitting approach. Though JD Davis is showing he is a serious prospect as well. I wonder which prospect Clutchfans find more intriguing. Because, a lot of people were thinking that if Bregman can't push Correa off the SS, then Bregman would just take over 3rd or 2nd base. If Moran proves the Astros initial analysis correct, that he was a potential #1 pick and solidifies 3rd base, I don't see Bregman pushing him off. Could Bregman find himself in the OF, Catcher spot, or even DH?
Agreed!!! Let me correct myself, .320 hitter in the prime years of the career..... Yes with the trajectory of a typical career to start off and to end a career, the Prime year numbers do take a hit. I'm just saying, I think Moran is going to be a really good MLB player. Hopefully for the Astros, because trades will have to be made. That Kool-Aide had me too hyper!!!
