1) There can always be surprises on the buyout/waiver market. Multiple teams have more than 15 guaranteed contracts, and they might choose the young guy with upside over proven vets. If the right vet gets cut, I could see us valuing him over Terry/Hayes. 2) As Bima and others have pointed out, the Harrell decision is huge. Think about having a cap ceiling on the team for the next YEAR. That's a long time, and several deals could pop up between now and then that involve us going over the cap line. Then again, it would be easy to argue that Harrell is a 1st round talent. With DMo and TJones hitting free agency next year, it would be nice to have a young guy wrapped up on a cheap long term deal. 3) I'm pretty sure Chuck can't demand more than a 1 year salary. Terry? Not so sure he can't. He was the starting PG on a WCF team. Another issue with Terry is minutes. With Bev back, signing Thornton, and trading for Terry, how much can we really offer him......5-10 minutes per, if that? 4) Don't see an Ariza trade. He's not going anywhere unless we can get a MASSIVE upgrade at power forward or sign Durant next offseason.
This thread is one of the great things about Clutchfans and the Rockets. Here we (and Morey more so) pay attention to the value of a 2nd round pick's contract structure. Meanwhile the Clippers just throw away $6million at the coach's son.
I agree completely. The Rockets live on the margins. Where other teams like to make a big production out of signing above average players to max contracts, Morey just sits there........waiting. Even now after the Lawson trade, we still seem like a team that could be involved in a big trade. We will have the mid-level contracts to move in December and lots of young guys signed to cheap deals.
First of all, the other 2 rookies were both signed by teams with lots of cap room and its a totally different situation in Houston. That said, those contracts they signed for 4 years and 5 mils, its looks good but actually only 2 years guaranteed and the total guaranteed is just 2.4 mils. The Rockets probably could offer about 800K per in a similar type of 2 years guaranteed contract. I seriously doubt Harrell will reject this offer and go with the same rout KJ did to sign a minimum one year deal so that he can leave next year. 800K vs 1.2 mil could mean a lots for most people, but the future and his development in this league will be much important than that 400K.
Why would Harrell care what the Rockets situation is? You're right that only 2 years are guaranteed, but that's still big money to most young guys. If the Rockets offer $800k, it means they used the MLE, they are hard capped at the apron, and we're almost certainly getting a 3rd or 4th year out of it. What KJ did is rare, but that might be Harrell's only option if we refuse to trade him and won't use the remaining MLE.

I've never been a fan of Mario. However, if we pick him up and then use him with TJones to trade for a big upgrade, that would work.
miami just moved napier today. not sure if they move chalmers too. although he could be moved later in the year.
(this has probably been answered and i apologize But) if harrell takes a one year deal, do we have any kind of bird rights? he'll be RFA - can we go over the cap to match/sign him ? i could see him betting on himself. Unless something unexpected happens, he'll spend most of his time in D-League or on the bench so he won't help his value there. BUT there's a good chance that with the new salary cap he could land a contract worth more than the ~700k we're offering him without having to prove much of anything on an NBA court.
sorry for bumping this, but not seeing any info on JET.. anyone have an update on what's going on with him? how likely is it that he returns?
Link? They were "near signing" him right around the time of the Lawson trade, haven't seen anything that says otherwise. I think the Rockets are holding out for minimum deals for Harrell and Terry; unless Terry gets a 2 year guaranteed deal somewhere else that he wants to be, neither side has a reason to rush.
Feigen wrote a piece quite recently, I think a week or so ago, that the Rockets weren't optimistic that Terry would be back. I read it in another thread, I am sorry I don't remember the name of the thread.
