It wasn't a brainstorming, but rather a question as to how things would/could progress if that change out and return were effected. Les' pocketbook is irrelevant to me; but not to Owner Alexander. Or just about any other owner including that fabled sharkmeister. Interesting after he, and other new owners, grow/regrow their fan base looking wildly extravagant with their wallets they soon enough fall into the same pattern as they who have gone before them. I'm planning no benefit for either JSmoove nor Owner Alexander.
Did the Rox let go of Smith? Did Smith let go of the Rox? The one true story will be interesting if ever revealed.
I suspect it is a little of both. Rockets likely wanted him, but not enough to offer him what he wanted.
I really wish Cyber would come back and give us a little info on this, he has to know something with his LA connect. Well as unlikely as it is (highly, highly unlikely), if we where to be luck enough to trade for a player who had a 18+ mill contract (Love, Milsap, Bosh, Anthony, Durant) I don't think we'd be worried about lux tax since we'd be ALL in at that point.
http://bbs.clutchfans.net/beta/index.php?threads/99er-of-the-year.5990/ Congrats Bima!!! You were simply the best, better than all the rest
I believe that's the mandatory guarantee date.....players can get an earlier date if they negotiate for it. My guess is that we haven't released the dates for Hayes and/or Wood in order to maintain maximum leverage/flexibility for signing Montrezl.
The Rockets have not yet officially signed either player. Also, I'd be more concerned about the *amount* of their partial guarantees (neither of which I know at this time).
Dwight's cap hold would be the max salary amount for 10+ year veterans under the 2016-17 salary cap. So probably close to $30 million.
I would like to just quickly say thank you to BimaThug for his superb cap status reports and clarifications over the years. His contributions are, for me, one of the highlights of this forum.
That sure doesn't help them in the pursuit of another big name / salary .... unless he takes less (like Duncan). Combine that along with the cap holds of Jones & DMo which I believe are around $6m each .... it could be tough for Morey to swing a big deal and maintain most of the current roster.
Question: I have heard of players having performance based incentives in their contracts. Which figure do they use for cap purposes? It is calculated later in the year, IIRC, but what about MVP incentives? Just curious.
Incentives typically count against the cap (for most purposes) only if they are categorized as "likely" (which usually depends on if they were achieved by the player the prior season). However, for luxury tax/apron determinations, all incentives are categorized are "likely," regardless of whether they are likely or not.
So, here's a hypothetical for you: Let's say Rockets sign Harrell to a one-year contract with a starting salary of $525,093, using a portion of the MLE, with an incentive for games played. If he plays in 60 games then he gets a $300,000 bonus. Obviously that contract would be considered as a "likely" incentive for the tax/apron determination and would be a signing using part of the MLE since a minimum salary contract by itself cannot contain incentives, which means we would be hard-capped at $88.74 million. But let's say down at the trade deadline there's 28 games left in the season and he's only played in 20 games. So, obviously the opportunity to achieve the bonus is gone. If this occurs, does the contract revert to a minimum salary contract and the apron cap removed so that we can make trades using the 125% + $100,000 criteria? Or does the apron hard cap remain in effect because the contract was originally signed using part of the MLE?
The moment Harrell signs a contract that does not conform to a rookie minimum salary (i.e., anything with incentives that could possibly give him more than that), the hard cap is imposed for the entire season.
Thanks for the quick answer. Looks to me like the only way around a hard cap is to either sign Harrell to a minimum deal or trade his rights to another team for an already signed player or future pick. What is your gut telling you about Morey's decision regarding Harrell and a hard cap?
I'm honestly not sure. I think they really like Harrell and want to keep him. But like you and finsraider, I'm intrigued by the possibility of dealing his rights for a recently signed draft pick (e.g., Mickey, Christmas, Holmes, etc.), absorbing that salary using the Shved TPE.
