Not only has he pitched poorly, he has had some health issues (which probably contributed to his poor pitching): Jarred Cosart (inner ear disorder) is scheduled to see a specialist this week in Chicago. Cosart landed on the disabled list in May due to vertigo and had a setback last month. The inner-ear disorder is on his right side and has impacted his "balance and gravity," but he's currently taking medication and has been throwing in recent days. More should be known this week, but he's hoping to be an option for the Marlins later this month or in September. http://www.rotoworld.com/recent/mlb/6318/jarred-cosart
He isn't even pitching right now, dealing with vertigo I did not like the trade when we made it at all. Obviously when you look at the total return now, there is a lot of potential. Funny thing is Marisnik was the one guy that I really liked, and he looks like the worst of the bunch now..
I think you would get a decent return for Marisnick. He isn't even arbitration eligible until 2018 and isn't a free agent until 2021. He is an exceptional fielder, has a positive WAR and if his contact rate increases he could be a very good player.
It isn't a coincidence that our fielding greatly improved this year when started manning center full time. Due to the bat, other teams would try to steal him on the cheap but I doubt Luhnow considers him a throw in on a trade. Probably part of what hurt any negotiations with San Diego, Preller wanted him for free.
For all the Appel questions and value diminishing, etc. (esp around the deadline).. do you guys think he could keep his ML ERA under 5? I'd say it'd be a 50/50 proposition. But I thought it was worth pointing out that Rodon's ERA is at 4.88. Mostly to say that young pitchers--even the ones who are hyped/seem more proven/etc.--still often struggle with consistency. I still have a lot of hope for Appel developing into a #2
Most people with his pedigree and raw stuff could keep their era sub 5 easily at 23 years old. He has had sufficient time in the minors and played at a high level in college. If we were not in a playoff push I would have no issue with them bringing him up. However not this year, he is as likely to give up 8-9 runs with our hands off manager. Rodon had an era of around 4.00 not that long ago. Honestly, he still isn't what he was before being over worked in college. He lacks the same command.
Sure, its still possible. I just don't think it's likely. The problem with Appel is, besides inconsistency, throwing 96+ doesn't matter if your delivery makes it hittable. Coming out of the draft, I never saw him as a true #1, a bona fide ace. I thought his ceiling was more of a Jordan Zimmerman type pitcher, which I think we'd all be ecstatic to have. He's looking more and more like an average to good 3 than a dominant 2. And that's a huge gap. We'll see.
If you look at his game log, he had a run of 4 straight good starts...aside from that, he's been very inconsistent all year, with blowups here and there
Jordan Zimmermann is a stud.. 4 straight awesome years, including #5 and #7 in Cy Young voting the last 2 years. I think he's close to an ace (if not one outright) But I get your point. I think it seemed like everyone who wanted to give up Appel in a deal for a rental probably thought he was likely to end up as a borderline starter...but now post-deadline, maybe that thinking has calmed down.
I agree with you that Rodon has been inconsistent and has a high WHIP as well from walking so many people. I live in Chicago half the time and HATE the Cubs so if the Astros are not available I watch the White Sox. Rodon is a really tough guy to figure out. I wouldn't be shocked if he turned into a Feldman #4-5 starter, but I also wouldn't be shocked if he became a #1-2 type guy that can gut out a lot of innings and has an era around 3..... it really depends on improving his command and control.
If either Appel or Rodon turns into Jordan Zimmerman, both teams should be happy..... over 1000 innings pitched, an era of only 3.2 and a 4:1 strikeout to walk ratio.
Rodon is going to figure it out. His stuff is so good and they have a great pitching coach in Don Cooper.
Daz Cameron is currently 3-4 with a double, 2 runs scored, and he's also stolen his 4th base (16 season) in the Appalachian League. Greeneville leads Bluefield 5-1 in the 5th.
Good to see... ready to see what the "new" class of Appel/Musgrove/Feliz do. VV and McCullers have graduated... while Asher/Straily/Buchhanan have turned into just guys now.
