He hit a cool .349 with a .945 OPS. That includes his first 3 home runs of the year. His batting average is north of .300 and climbing as a 22 year old in AA. It'd be good to start seeing some more power, but I wouldn't be opposed to a Mark Grace type hitter at 3rd base. Hopefully he keeps this up for another month. He had 2 hits yesterday, and has a double and a walk already today.
Think Astros may be able to coax 10-15 HR power out of him. If not, still would likely be an average 3B. Astros are going to have some tough decisions early next year.
Any contributions from Moran at the big league level would exceed my expectations. I was never high on him (even leading up to the draft) but he seems to have at least an above average hit tool.
not Astros related, but great to see Houston product (Bellaire HS 09) Tyler Duffey get his call to the show. First start is Wed. vs. TOR...have fun with that lineup kid, best of luck!
Astros brass has pretty much been on unofficial record as saying, it was going to be Moran or Appel. Much to the dismay of a lot of Kris Bryant fans. But I suppose had the Astros gone the route of Moran, there would have been a different draft all together with the team going after tough signings at over slot with the savings off Moran's pre agreed deal. But in the end it has worked out quite well. Of course with a lot more to see, but both Appel and Moran are showing signs of MLB life....
I think Valbuena gets moved in the offseason and the Astros expect/hope Moran will be the 3rd baseman. Lowrie and possibly Gonzalez will still be here as well if he doesn't perform.
Brock Dykxhoorn allowed a hit, walked 1, and struck out 8 over 5 shutout innings in Quad Cities' 6-1 win over Wisconsin today. Dykxhoorn also has a gold medal, which he won as part of Team Canada during the Pan Am Games.
No, in fact it's the exact opposite. Dominguez was a .250 hitter in the minors with decent pop, Moran is a .300 hitter with little pop. Plus the fact that we got Dominguez for the corpse of Carlos Lee tempered a lot of expectations.
Phillips is a nice prospect, but with Cameron and Tucker drafted, he became expendable. His hit tool is great.
Daz Cameron was the steal of the draft....He is playing like the prospect that was consider as the unanimous number one #1 pick 2 years ago. He is faster than maybe people thought he was. Him and Tucker are definitely the future.
I think Moran will be in Triple A next year, and Lowrie plays 3b. Valbuena is an interesting players, as i believe he is better giving you 400 at bats instead of 600. He plays 3b, 2b and 1b, and probably is able to learn the corner OF if needed. Valbuena has a lot of value to any team. Moran is the future, but probably in 2017.
I do think they will move Valbuena. Doesn't seem likely that they would carry Valbuena, Marwin, & Lowrie next season, and with Valbuena closest to FA plus the least capable of playing SS, so he makes the most sense to trade. I doubt Moran is opening day 3B, but get called up mid-season.
Do you think Moran will get the call to Fresno by September if he keeps hitting? There are times that the organization wants Triple A experience (Springer) but then others (Lance and Velasquez) where Double A is enough.
