Concern is his slow hips and bat speed. In fairness he has toned up and he seems to have a little quicker bat. I have seen some guys in AA get stuff past him that didn't happen at A+, so the bat speed criticism may be valid at the majors. Still he has the best approach to hitting in the entire organization (includes Correa). He is an expert at getting the count the way he wants and forces pitchers to throw pitches they don't.... and that is where he does the damage. Good glove already and I suspect if his bat plays up in the majors, that he could become a gold glove type fielder.
How does that compare on the scouting report on Singleton/Brett Wallace/Daryle Ward at the same stage?
My guy Jason Martin went 1-3 with a HR and 1 BB. Who wants a ticket for the bandwagon? Dude is 19 years old still. Hitting .294/.363/.450 in A-ball now. Has prospect pedigree as a HS signee. There's zero reason he shouldn't be getting hype at this point. He's our next breakout prospect.
He hasn't been mentioned in a single article on fangraphs or Baseball Prospectus. No idea about Baseball America. Honestly, I think he's flying under the radar because he's in the Astros system. No chance he'd be ignored in an average system.
Or more likely its because he doesnt steal bases, hit for power and has an average arm.... Probably not even a top 200 prospect
And only a 15% career K rate. High OBP, gap power, plays a good CF, young for the level. But not top 200.
Baseball Prospectus's "PECOTA" projection system uses decades of data to find similar players to prospects, in terms of similar performance at the same age. 2 of Jason Martin's top 3 "similar" players are age 19 Andrew McCutchen and Michael Brantley.
Hmm and Phillips had a season last year that absolutely crushed Martin's season this year, has better tools across the board (significantly) and didnt crack the top 100 until he did it again at a higher level. Take the Astros shades off, he is not top 200 yet and you wont find a non astros fan who disagrees.
And because Phillips had such a great season last year, he is now rated in the top 20's as a prospect. He made a monumental leap, from coming out of nowhere practically. Same could happen for a guy like Martin....
Whats your point, is Martin close to Phillips as a prospect if this is 2014? No Is Brett Phillips in the top 100 on any list after his 2014 season? No (I dont think so at least) What does that equal??? It equals borderline top 200 because of the lack of power, and lack of arm strength that Phillips has. If he does it at a higher level then maybe.
Geez @dankush, it's an Astros Minor League thread, fans here are supposed to get excited about our players. It's been a great night of taking back first place, not sacrificing the farm for Hamels, and seeing some our top young talent perform well. No one is calling Martin the best prospect in baseball so it's really ok to be happy that he's having success.
Sorry I keep forgetting this whole forum is like some kind of support group or something. Dont express your opinion with stats and comparisons just be positive boys! My b, why should we set realistic expectations for our players and prospects, theyre all the best
